this had such a Serenity vibe to it in many ways. loved it for that as well as the homages to some classics.

No idea. But that was Brolin's face in Thanos' design. He did JUST do voice work or did they MoCap his face too?

CAN NOT wait to see this again. BTW, my theater was packed (It's the 1st of the month, afterall) but it looked like more people bought tickets for the non-3D showing (I saw it in 3D) but I might see it again in non-3D because the sound in the 3D theater didn't have enough kick in it....Which is probably the only complaint I have about the film experience.

From the above review
A cogent and concise an outline of the schism between the way Marvel approaches it's properties for live action and the way Warner/DC approaches theirs.
The real question is what Marvel's got that the Hollywood studios don't--presumably a deep understanding of the Marvel world and a desire to share it with an audience. They're saying, "we love and believe in this and know you will too." As opposed to: "eat this pablum that we made sweet and tasty so you'll like it."
A cogent and concise an outline of the schism between the way Marvel approaches it's properties for live action and the way Warner/DC approaches theirs.
Guardians of the Galaxy didn't feel like they were apologizing for the Marvel comics universe.

Went to the matinee today with almost impossibly high expectations----
And it exceeded them by a mile- that was the most fun we have had at a movie in a long, long, time- it was absolutely fantastic.
And we saw it in IMAX 3D, and thought it was great as well. Usually come away regretting paying the $$ for it, but not this time......

Yeah. Was interesting to see what wasn't in the film considering I'd seen the trailers a lot. One of them I bet was made just for the trailer introduction of the team.

Regardless of whether the movie did big business (which it is doing), the movie is great. It's not embarassed by a story about deep space aliens (Green Lantern), instead it says "Forget your Earth, let's go out here where there's Kree's and Nova Corps and mf'ing Thanos!"
What I liked about the movie most is that its an origin story, but made in a way that doesn't have the typical origin story drag.
And while everyone is praising Pratt, Rocket, and Groot - I loved Drax. I was leery about Bautista, the guy is big, but his acting is not something you would want dragging down and otherwise good cast, but the guy delivered BIG time. Granted, he's playing an overgrown simpleton, but his comic timing as an overgrown simpleton was spot on.

In the comic com panel last year he very much admitted in that he was very new to this but also where he stood in comparison as well. It was a nice moment from that panel. I think he was on beat with everything else. He made a huge leap in the last Riddick film for himself and he's solid here too.

Oh, I just realized that Marvin Gaye has become one hell of a good luck charm for Marvel. His songs have now made the Marvel Universe 2-for-2!

Just got back. This movie was fucking awesome!
It was funny, had action, and heart that could make you cry if you are one of those girly men type. And just looked fucking cool. It brought the fun back to space, the fun that was missing from Ep1-3.
All the characters were great, but Drax was my standout he was funny and a badass.
Heres how I stack them, and will get shit from everyone.
1.GOTG
2. CAPTAIN AMERICA (love this movie until he thaws and is in present time so quickly)
3. IRON MAN
That's it. The other 2 IM suck, Thor was mediocre, Thor 2 was awful. And Avengers is just fucking boring, just a plain safe movie that took no chances.

How was he in the present so quickly? That was what? 5 mins max at the end? Movie was like like 2 hours. I wouldn't have minded more Cap in WWII but 1 film in that era was fine.

Saw it . Gotta admit, I loved it, and will catch it again in 3D tomorrow. Chris Pratt was great in his role, I really do hope he gets more action-comedy roles after this one, preferably with Alison Brie as his love interest (they work well together). I also liked how this movie went the extra mile to make sure we know that the MCU is just that, an entire universe. I expected this movie to drop hints and make references to Thanos, but I got all giddy when they showed him in full and made him more than a walk-on character. In fact, a lot significant groundwork for future MCU movies seems to have been laid in this story .
While some might say it's the hardcore fans, the line stretching all the way around the theater lobby when I left my showing seems to indicate this is drawing the interest of casual moviegoers. I picture this getting positive word of mouth, as it plays well to non-readers . I have only read a few GotG issues in a trade collection, and found this immensely entertaining. I'm sure people are keen enough to catch the allusions to other Marvel movies to enjoy those bits as well.
I am guessing the stuff with Quill's father will be subject matter of the sequel.

It's a miracle: I convinced my wife to see this in IMAX 3D with me today. We both really, really enjoyed it. Loved the scope of the story and the expanse of the story's universe, the character relationships and growth arch they each made, the humor, the drama, the place in the Marvel film universe, and so on. I really liked the makeup and thought Nebula looked particularly awesome.
I have to say, I was particularly moved by Peter Quill's speech (I think I got it right):
That response is phenomenal. It's exactly the kick in the butt it sometimes feels like we could all use at least a little bit, these days. Anything that takes an active stand against cynicism and calls for action to help someone else is a good step forward, in my book. Really dug that, dare I say I was moved by it.

I actually mentioned Bautista too in my mini review. He was fabulous, but Cooper as Rocket was gold.

At that moment, my friend leaned over and said that Drax should have taken a dump and handed it to Quill.
