There was a couple of scenes with a bit of crude dialogue, but overall, a rather enjoyable, exciting, and very funny movie.
Opinion of the IMAX/3D??

Rank this movie in the Marvel Universe canon.

Better than Avengers, Iron Man, or Captain America?

Or.....doesn't count?

Solid 4 1/2 stars.

Just got back from seeing this in IMAX 3D - which looked incredible, with some excellent depth in every scene - and this is easily the most fun I've had with a Marvel film since Iron Man.

Gunn imbues the picture with the perfect ratio of humor, heart, action, and heroics. I couldn't have been more pleased with the cast, all of whom deliver great performances. Even Groot, who says so little, made a big impression. I can't think of a single weak element here, as the film balances exposition and history alongside a quick pace and an urgent incoming catastrophe.

Killer soundtrack, too.

Very much looking forward to GOTG2.

There are only two ways this movie has to be seen.

1. IMAX 3D
2. 3D with Dolby Atmos sound.

Everything else you might as well wait for the blu ray.

I am assuming you hate having fun too?

Best Marvel film to date. Saw it in standard 2D as I went with some friends after they got off work. Seeing it tomorrow afternoon with my wife in IMAX 3D.

I like having fun that's congruent and not just shoved in there, because it's just shoved in there.

As I said, the film rocked, the after credits did not.

Spoiler:
I thought the first stinger with 'lil Groot was cute and lighthearted. They're not going to kill off Groot.

I thought the second stinger with Howard the Duck was a brilliant "fuck you" from Gunn.

Holy shit, guardians of the galaxy is epic. I think they just stole the best MCU movie right out from under the Avengers. I know some people have said Groot steals the show, but rocket raccoon was the star. I want to see a movie with just him. The action was great, a ton of comedy and the special effects were superb

I loved the film more than I ever imagined I would. The pace, scope, effects and casting came together to form a very entertaining film. I never laugh out loud at movies but the blacklight comeback had the whole crowd going nuts.

Looks like someone's butthurt that Lea Thompson wasn't present.

Fucking loved the movie. And even if the after credit shot was pretty much just random and not leading into Avengers 2, I still enjoyed it.

I wouldn't go that far, but if your family is, say, pre-teens, sure. I don't think I would take a six year old to it.

It's a Top 3 for sure, up there with the original Avengers.

I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. Nice balance of humor and action. Felt the two end sequences were a little weak, but in a way i was glad they were self contained for a change. Rocket Racoon easily stole the show and Groot was awesome. Looking forward to seeing a sequel.
Spoiler:
Thanos is looking all kinds of awesome, and seeing a Celestial in action made me go a little crazy. Galactus who?

Curious why you gave only 4 1/2 stars. Your write-up sounds 5-star.

I have to agree. After such a fun movie (the bit before the credits roll was ADORABLE, and will sell tons of desk toys!), the after credit one-off joke seemed - thrown together, and wasn't really worth sitting through all the credits for. A few people at my viewing got it, but a lot of people were like, huh? Only misstep.

I had more emotional reaction to a drunken raccoon breaking down about name calling than I did the entirety of Man of Steel.

Simply an amazing film and J.J. Abrams has some crazy shoes to fill in making a new star wars movie, because this was it right here.

There was one scene with Groot where he does something, then grins straight at the camera, that was absolutely perfect. None of the other Guardians had such a dead on, crowd pleasing moment to match it. The biggest laugh and cheer in the movie.

Welp, we have tickets for our 4 year old, my wife is going to bail with our kid if it's too much for him. Thanks.

I did like the scenes with Groot, as they felt very much like a Guillermo del Toro directed film. Whenever Groot did anything I felt like I was watching Hellboy 2 - almost like that character was from GDT's world.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy (Gunn, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I took my mom to see this last night. She had never seen any of the Marvel movies prior. She enjoyed it a lot.

As for me, bar none, this is the best Marvel movie out there. I loved all the others (minus Iron Man 2...that really did suck), but this one hit all the right notes. Chris Pratt is perfect as Star-Lord. The rest of the cast is solid, but Bradley Cooper deserves some kind of award for Rocket. Easily the best character in the film.

The soundtrack was fantastic! I knew all the songs, while the younger crowd I was with did not. I am pretty sure there was at least two people using Shazam to figure it out. Effects were top notch, while I did not see it in 3D, I am 100% positive it translates well.

Lastly, the end credit sequence was awesome! I freaked when I saw it...I was the only one in the theater who knew who it was. Which also happened when I saw the Avengers...go figure. Looking forward to the sequel and seeing this again in 3D. Easily my favorite film of the year so far. Excellent job Marvel. I bet DC is shaking in their boots hoping Batman Vs. Superman doesn't suck.

Nothing else? Nothing Age of Ultron related?
