thriller: "OH MY GOD, THAT DUDE TOTALLY CHOPPED OFF THAT CHICK'S HEAD WITH A CHAINSAW!!"

suspense: "OH MY GOD, IS THAT DUDE REALLY GOING TO CHOP OFF THAT CHICK'S HEAD WITH A CHAINSAW!?!?!?"

or something.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

It's an arbitrary assigning of one of two similar terms to categorize a movie. Like dinner or supper. Or full figured or big fat fatty.

Repeat after me:

"The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain."

That's suspense.

"Get me to the church on time."

That's a thriller.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Now you're changing the original question by asking about crime dramas.

Action happens in a thriller. You're waiting to see if action will happen in suspense.

Re: Difference between suspense & thriller?

Suspense is the anticipation, usually over a certain extended amount of time. Thriller would be thrilling which might entail action.

Suspense would be waiting in a plane before skydiving. Thriller happens once the suspense sends and you jump.

Although mostly suspense ("what's in the box?") it can be classified as both since there was a chase sequence or two, as I recall. But ultimately, it boiled down to what/if anything would Brad Pitt's character choose to do. So it's mainly suspense.

I saw your answer, and based on all the replies given to you, maybe, just maybe, you can figure this out on your own. At least just guess based on what you know about the movie and about the the difference between suspense and thriller. I'd argue that Se7en is a suspense thriller, because it contains both suspenseful and thrilling moments. It also is a combination of other genres.
