I recall watching all the incarnations back then based on the hype. I don't recall much of anything about them other than I was unimpressed.

I thought the remake was much better than the original as well. PG-13 or not, it did a great job of creeping me out. The scene where she comes out of the TV in the original Japanese version was laughable IMO.

The sequel however, was a giant turd.

Yeah, I thought The Ring (US) was really well done. Gore Verbinski's direction, Naomi Watts' performance, and the eerie cinematography were all top notch. The Ring 2 did suck balls though. The Rings short film that connected both movies was excellent.

Re: Rings (The Ring 3) (2015, D: F. Javier Gutiérrez)

Exclusive: Johnny Galecki has signed on to play one of the leads in Paramount’s Rings, the third installment of the horror franchise about a cursed videotape that kills a viewer within seven days. Galecki will play Gabriel, a handsome, pleasure seeking professor who mentors and helps boyfriend and girlfriend duo, Holt (Alex Roe) and Julia (Matilda Lutz). Sources tell Deadline that Galecki’s character is a complete departure from his sensitive nerd guy Leonard on CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Filming is already underway on Rings. Galecki is repped by WME and Management 360.

The first two Rings chalked up $411M at the global B.O. The third chapter is directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez from a script by David Loucka, Jacob Aaron Estes, and Akiva Goldsman. Rings will bow on Friday, November 13. The first Ring in 2002 was based on the Japanese film Ringu which was adapted from the novel by Koji Suzuki.

Last month Galecki opened the doors to his Warner Bros.-based production label, Alcide Bava Productions, which will develop TV series and features films. It was also announced that former De Line Pictures President Andrew Haas has joined Galecki as his producing partner and vice president of Alcide Bava. The label is currently producing the Bobby Miller-directed The Master Cleanse, which stars Galecki, Anna Friel, Angelica Houston and Oliver Platt.

Re: Rings (The Ring 3) (2015, D: F. Javier Gutiérrez)

“The Ring” sequel “Rings” is getting a new release date.

Paramount Pictures is pushing back the third film in the horror series from its Nov. 13 debut. It will now launch in 2016, most likely in the first quarter of the year, although a specific release date has yet to be set.

The move comes after Paramount moved the start of “The Big Short,” Adam McKay’s adaptation of the Michael Lewis bestseller, into this calendar year and opted to bow Charlie Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” in an Oscar qualifying run at the end of December.

In its old date, “Rings” would have faced off against the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt drama “By the Sea,” the Chilean miners drama “The 33” and the comedy “Love the Coopers.”

“Rings” is directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez (“Before the Fall”) and stars newcomers Matilda Lutz and Alex Roe, as well as “The Big Bang Theory’s” Johnny Galecki. Previously titled “The Ring 3D,” its the first installment in the series about a cursed video tape to hit screens in nearly a decade. It takes place 13 years after the events of the first film.

The film is produced by Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes, and written by David Loucka, Jacob Aaron Estes and Akiva Goldsman.

re: Rings (The Ring 3) (2017, D: F. Javier Gutiérrez)

Box Office Mojo reports Paramount has shifted Rings from April 1, 2016 to October 28, 2016 — nearly a full year after its original November 13, 2015 release date. The delay shouldn’t come as too much of a shock, considering Rings‘ old April 1 release date is less than two months away and we’ve yet to see so much as a teaser trailer. A Halloween release is probably a better fit for the horror movie anyway. Rings will now go up against Inferno (the Da Vinci Code sequel; yes, they’re still making those) and “Untitled Lionsgate Horror Film.”

Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez, Rings stars Matilda Lutz and Alex Roe as a young couple who get caught up in Samara’s video tape curse. Johnny Galecki and Aimee Teegarden also star. Contrary to earlier rumors, Rings is not a prequel but a sequel set 13 years after the events of The Ring. Which raises the question of how these young people are even watching VHS tapes in this day and age. Who still owns a VCR? Or has Samara gone digital.

I'm not impressed. It just looks like a retread of the first one without bringing anything new. It's been 11 years since the last one. I thought they would have come up with something more.

Looks like they remade #1 for the Ouija (2014) crowd.

It's not like the first one was some masterpiece, this looks more or less the same. Sort of middle of the road horror. I'll check out almost any theatrically released horror. So I'm there.

Speaking of which... Verbinski has yet to make a single engaging live action film. He makes a shit ton for the studios but his work is thoroughly unengaging on every level.
I don't know. I can admit when a remake is better than the original and that was the case with The Ring over Ringu.

Ringu was just very slow.

Yes, the remake had a TON of great atmosphere. It's a solid horror film (especially for being PG-13). This new one doesn't look like it brings anything fresh to the franchise, but I'm mildly curious.

I disagree completely. The original Ring builds tension, slowly but surely, so when Sadako finally makes her appearance, it's terrifying. The American Ring constantly diffuses the tension with minor jump scares, and when Samara makes her appearance it has none of the weight of Sadako. The Japanese Ring is a horror classic. The American Ring is just another generic horror movie.

It's the other way around for me. I saw Ring when it first came out on VCD and was disappointed by how dull it was, I rather enjoyed Verbinski's remake though, the improved pace and atmosphere helping immensely.

Of course it didn't help that Ring was riding a ridiculous wave of hype at that time.

Speaking of horror movies around that period, I'm surprised Hollywood never figured out how to adapt Audition. I always wanted them to do that, and advertise it as an R-rated romantic comedy.

re: Rings (The Ring 3) (2017, D: F. Javier Gutiérrez)

I loved both the original Japanese Ring and the US remake. My one issue with the US version is that Samara looks way too CGI, which lowers the horror of her big scene. Sadako is "real" in her big scene which makes that scene way more terrifying. The US version does have incredible atmosphere and cinematography though, far more than the vast majority of horror films.

That trailer looks pretty terrible but then I thought the original was completely overrated. Of course, I never did care for the little-girl-with-long-black-hair-hanging-down-in-her-face ghosts that were all the rage there for awhile.

Yep, add that one to the list.

I'd love to win one of those mega-lotteries and fund one of those remakes just for the hell of it.
