Begin Again (2014, D: John Carney)

This is the latest film from John Carney, the director of Once. It was formerly title Can a Song Save Your Life? and when you watch the film you can easily see why: the story (which will sound familar to those who've seen Once) centers on two strangers (Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo) whose chance meeting leads to a musical collaboration that changes both their lives.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CwLuDO_Cxfc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Here's an excerpt from my full review:

Unlike Once, Begin Again isn't structured around a budding romance between its two leads, even though sparks do fly between Knightley and Ruffalo (most notably in a sequence where Gretta and Dan take a leisurely nighttime stroll through the streets of New York, accompanied by the vocals of Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder on her iPod). On the contrary, the movie is all about how its characters deal with the emotional fallout from their broken relationships and, in some cases, learn how to mend them.

Half of this is conveyed (quite sublimely) in the film's songs — from the show-opening 'A Step You Can't Take Back' to the closing track, 'Lost Stars' — which are sung with down-to-earth grace and charm by Knightley and Levine and will stay with audiences long past the closing credits. Carney uses the songs to tremendous effect, allowing their lyrics to help chart the characters' thoughts and emotions, sometimes playing different renditions of the same song to convey varying perspectives or to heighten its emotional impact.

The music is complemented by the actors' performances, especially that of Knightley and Ruffalo, who fill their roles with an irresistible charm, even when their characters aren't feeling nearly their best. The two leads set a bassline for the tone of the entire film, one that's never overly melancholy, despite their relationship woes. There's always a gentle airiness about — whether it arises from Knightley's impish smile or Ruffalo's gruff, yet loveable, demeanor — and it makes the movie feel refreshing, even if the broad strokes of the story are something we've seen once before.
4 out of 5. The major criticism most reviewers seem to have of this is that it tries to hard to replicate the appeal of Once for commercial audiences, but it really depends on how you look at it. Although Carney's latest isn't without moments of sincere emotion, it's also unabashedly buoyant and sentimental. Think of it as the feel-good, radio-friendly pop song to the raw, acoustic ballad that is Once. Begin Again has an undeniable, mass appeal, but that doesn't make it any less engaging.

Re: Begin Again (2014, D: John Carney)

Nowadays it's very rare I want more of a film, but in the end, I think I wanted just a little more from "Begin Again". It starts with a down-and-out indy record exec (Dan, played by Mark Ruffalo) stumbling across a somewhat put-upon performance at open-mic night by Gretta (Kiera Knightley), and between her stripped down performance of her original song, and Dan's inner ear for song production, he is inspired to create music once again, and Gretta's own recent heartbreak fuels some of her songwriting.

So the pair gathers up a band and records out in the open on the streets of New York City. I wanted more of these outdoor recording sessions, it felt really lively and organic, and seeing how music was bringing together some of the characters was not overplayed, but just had a familial undercurrent buoying its composition.

If you're a fan of "Once", you'll probably be a fan of "Begin Again" (same director, James Carney, for both films).

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

This was surprisingly well made. While it didn't go into the moody (and great) depths of Once, it also didn't have some of the treacle that slowed it down at parts. Recommended.

AMC is giving away 4 free tickets to catch this over the weekend.

I looked and of course there's no AMC near me actually playing this anymore. Thanks AMC

I never gave any comments after I saw this, but I loved it. Definitely in my top 10 so far this year.

Yeah, this is a feel good movie. Nothing challenging but also it's not filled with cliches either.

I thought for sure
Spoiler:
that Ruffalo's character would sell out Knightley to save his career or something.

Casting him in a film made in 2014 would be an impressive feat indeed. The casting director would have to be a necromancer or something.

Couldn't find this in the Best Buy ad and such...what's the best price for this film on Blu-Ray? I think it comes out today. (10/28/14)

Thanks in advance!

I'd wait for Black Friday. No movie is worth its price so close to Black Friday. Well most movies unless they really got a great price.

Re: Begin Again (2014, D: John Carney)

It's a good movie, though I felt like it was lightweight fluff compared to the magical Once. You can definitely note the similarities, though Once had the much better music performed by the Swell Season and actual musicians in those roles. I'm sorry, I love Keira Knightley as much as anyone, but an actual singer could have invested much more emotion in the songs.

Begin Again is one of those movies you'll want to see once, but I am not sure it has much repeat value.

Re: Begin Again (2014, D: John Carney)

I've been wanting to see it again since I saw it in theaters, so it'll be hard waiting a full month knowing it exists for home viewing. : - ) I've already saved the cost of two more theater tix, so I'm good.

Anyone have a good in store price? A local store has it showing as over $22, but I'm hoping a chain will have it for $19.99 or less. Not in the ads I checked though.

Thanks!

I think Target or Best Buy is carrying it at $20 this week. The review hasn't gone live but the Blu-ray has nearly reference video quality.

A bevy of 1080P screenshots from the new Blu-ray:

Apparently Target has a 20% off Cartwheel discount this week on Begin Again, making it $16.

I just got around to watching this and I loved it. I thought that it was one of the best films that I have seen this year. I'm going to have to listen to the music again on Spotify.

5/5 Mark Ruffalo is one of the most underappreciated actors working today.

Re: Begin Again (2014, D: John Carney)

Somehow I missed that this was the follow-up to Once, but I saw that fact mentioned in one of those "Most Underappreciated Films of 2014" lists so I caught up to it last weekend. It's not as raw and passionate as Once, but it's a little easier to take because of it. I loved it, and have had the songs stuck in my head ever since. And "Lost Stars" was nominated for an Oscar, as I expected.

I just watched this tonight, after buying it blind for $10 at Target last week. Such a good movie. I absolutely loved it. If I were compiling a list of favorites of 2014, it would be top 10.

Good to hear. I blind-bought it last week at Target as well ($8 with Cartwheel coupon ). Looking forward to watching it.

Question : Is it appropriate for a 13 year old girl? I don't mind some language and maybe a discrete love scene, but not much more than that for her.

Language is listed as the sole reason for the R rating. The F word is fairly prevalent, but that is about as bad as it gets.

Yeah, my 13-year-old watched it and has seen a lot worse.

A 13-year-old could handle it if she hasn't been completely sheltered from the world. This film is more about the passion for music than romance.
