Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Reeves, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Fair criticisms. I think that while there was plenty to like about the film, it did give in to convention a lot more often than the reviews had perhaps led me to believe.

Really enjoyed this, and I'm glad they brought back my boy Maurice. But Keri Russel's character wasn't really necessary, and of course they had to show Kirk Acevedeo was a bad guy by having him smoke.
There's a lot of praise for Andy Serkis, but not enough for the animators, who are brushed aside. Great performance from him, but a ton of hard work and artistry from the people who brought it to life.
Check out Randall William Cook's (animation supervisor for LotR) on Serkis and creating Gollum. Spoilers: There were a lot of situations where Serkis's performance was not used, or outright changed.

Now that's not to say that there isn't a lot of hard work going on with Serkis or that he didn't do a great job. There should be more recognition for motion capture performances, but it wouldn't be fully appreciated without animators, and not just technically, but artistically.

I don't think we're shoving them aside. We already know they did damn good. Only so much can be said about that.
Saying that... I much preferred the cgi in this then the previous one. The other one couldn't transition well the live action to cgi setting. Always looked off to me.

I liked the first 2/3 of this a lot. But the last third seemed very formulaic and in the end I really did not get the arc of the movie. I loved the look, though it should have been much more than 10 years elapsed since last movie. Sounds like the next one will be Caesar as well but I would enjoy going farther into the future. I was not in live with Serkis choices in many places for Caesar, I enjoyed the other actors more.

The message of the original series of Planet of the Apes was that man is evil, the Apes superior (until the last film, when the Apes slipped.) This film commits the ultimate sin, as did Rise, stating humans are basically good, with only a handful evil... Failed altruistic motives are the reason the Apes became who they are, and mankind is all but wiped out.... I was infuriated when Caesar said
Whether true or not, it is one of the major problems I have with this reboot. Why is there the need to deviate from the original premise that we live in dystopia and whitewash the true nature of the human race? This film, although I enjoyed it, was Quest for Fire with guns, not Planet of the Apes.

Because there's no point in making as simplistic as the original. If they can expand on their current concepts then it could be interesting. If they just keep making straight action movies, it'll be a bit boring.

The originals were not simplistic nor straight action movies. They were homilies asking the human race to be good to one another.

Regarding Serkis' nomination for an Oscar, I thought I heard somewhere that there is an Academy Awards rule where and actor must actually appear on screen to be eligible for a nominated but when I tried to research it tonight I wasn't able to find anything about it. All I could find was rules regarding dubbed voices.
I liked the Donkey Kong homage where the gorilla threw a barrel at the humans.

Reeves aped my childhood!
Been waiting to say that!
Saw it today. Liked it, but didn't fall in love with it like so many here. It felt cold and emotionless. I never did get invested into any of the characters.
The score was too subtly understated which was a shame. It was a fantastic callback to the original series. I would have liked to hear it more.

Loved it
Thought it was fantastic. Matt Reeves did one hell of a job, but huge kudos to Andy Serkis as Caesar. For playing another cgi character, his performance was really solid. The animators did a great job with Caesar and the other apes.
Looking forward to seeing where they take things in the third movie.

Still digesting my thought on this one, but it's a solid 7/10 for me. Entertaining, but I felt it was flawed and a tad bloated. Didn't live up to Rise imo

I watched this last week and really enjoyed it. The first movie in this series was very well done and this one was even better. Strange reading someone say to the effect that they had no emotional investment in the movie. They are bringing the apes to life in a really intelligent way and trying to avoid all the cliches from previous movies. For me this is the best reboot series of the last decade. After the Burton affair i thought this series was dead and i had little interest in seeing new movies. Now, i cannot wait to see the next in the series.

This one is a hell of jump in quality from the previous one. That one was neat/ok aside from Serkis.

I think (are you sitting down?) it's partially because the apes still look too wild. I guess there was something about the original movies using people in suits that made it different, that really drove home the point about how both groups had similar flaws. Seeing the apes in Dawn still look like regular apes (and the CGI was convincing, though, maybe too convincing) made it feel like some other franchise that was hitting the same ideas as POTA.
I'll be picking up the Bluray and look forward to giving it another chance, but there was something special about the original series of movies (and even the Burton film) that these new ones just aren't capturing.

For me, the elements of the originals (and the Burton one) that I like are the astronauts/space travel bits and the weird ape culture, costumes, architecture, etc.. While I think the new series is decent, it's missing those elements that I enjoyed a lot.

Finally got the BD and watched it today. Koba dual-wielding assault rifles was frickin' awesome. Probably the best scene I have seen in a movie all year.
