Re: Doctor Strange (201?) (D: Derrickson)
Back in June and July of 2013, Latino Review posted a couple of breakdowns regarding the Dr. Strange script that was written by Joshua Oppenheimer in 2010. Since then, Marvel has changed their Dr. Strange movie plans. They've recently hired Scott Derrickson ("Deliver Us From Evil") to direct it and hired screenwriter Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus") to work on the screenplay. Devin Faraci of Badass Digest appeared on Meet The Movie Press alongside Mark Reilly and Jeff Sneider. There, he revealed, Dr. Strange is not an origin story.
"So, for Dr. Strange they've had a script in-house forever. It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It's got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That's all gone. Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script. Jon Spaihts is working totally new, On his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script." - Devin Faraci

Not really.
It's nice to know his backstory but it doesn't solidly the character like someone like Spidey or Iron Man. What he is in the moment is what he is as a whole.
I'm glad for a no origin introduction film.

Probably could be told in about 30 minutes if it had to though.

I don't really understand having a "no more origin story" things, I think those are pretty key for the unknown characters.

I think Doctor Strange's origin story is critically important, especially for a character that is relatively unknown to the vast majority of moviegoers. He's got such a complex back story that it seems a disservice to the character to not explore that. Even if it's not a full-on origin story there has to be some sort of explanation about where the character came from and what his motivations are. Imagine them just throwing us into the characters of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk without developing the origins. And those are all characters that were arguably more well-known than Doctor Strange.

GOTG was definitely an origin story for the team, but you could make the argument that the individual members (aside from Starlord) didn't get much in the way or origins. Just passing mentions of their pasts.
It was essentially a cosmic version of Avengers, but without Starlord, Gamora, Rocket & Groot and Drax movies leading up to it.

I think they could do a Doctor Strange origin story without it being an origin movie. At the beginning of the Incredible Hulk they showed the origin basically right at the start in a montage over the credits. This worked perfectly. However, i think that it would be smart to have it play out as somewhere maybe 20 minutes in we get a flashback sequence (similar to the one in Iron Man 3 where we see the younger Tony before he came Iron Man) where we get a truncated version of events. That way it cuts through all the process of the origin being long and drawn out and keeps the story flowing.

Dr. Strange is a brand-new property to audiences. An origin is absolutely necessary. It doesn't have to be a 2-hour origin movie; Captain America was 1 hour of origin and 1 hour of exploits and adventure. No reason why Dr. Strange couldn't be the same.
