Re: Untitled Star Wars Spinoff (Boba Fett?) (12/16/16) D: Gareth Edwards

I generally shy away from reporting too much on the specifics of the stand-alone spin-off Star Wars films because we hear so much stuff it can be difficult to know what to take seriously. Since there has never been a Star Wars spin-off film like what we’re about to get, there’s no good or bad track record. For this reason, we’re having to rely pretty much entirely on the sources that have panned out for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So today’s information comes from a friend that did give us legit Star Wars: The Force Awakens set photos and more.

A code name for the production is:

Luminac Industrial Goods

They go on to say there’s going to be a really interesting situation at Pinewood Studios:

The filming will eventually overlap with some of Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Who are they hearing the film is about?

Han Solo

They went on to say the word around the current production at Pinewood is that Aaron Paul is looking to be attached to the first Star Wars spin-off film in some fashion. There was no direct implication he was playing Han Solo.

That’s the meat of the conversation!

I know nothing is confirmed yet but I think Aaron Paul would be a decent choice for young Han Solo.

ugh. I don't want prequels of anything with other actors playing roles we already know and love... unless you can invent a time machine and get a young Harrison Ford to star.

or this kid, if he could actually act and not just do an (albeit killer) impersonation.

How much rehashed crap are we going to have to slog through before we get something truly original?

Well we are getting new stories just with the original cast involved or involving classic characters. You can't really fault Disney for that as they're trying to re-establish Star Wars and the best way to do that at least in my opinion is to use familiarity along with new characters and concepts. Eventually we'll get new films or whatever involving a totally new cast I'm sure.

I'm with you DaveyJoe!

What is he talking about? The fact that the Star Wars universe is lush and ripe with stories waiting to be told and yet we have to keep coming back to the same damned played out and tired characters in some form or another.

Imagine if Disney had done this from the beginning ... You would have had Snow White and the Seven Dwarves as their first animated film. Then we would have gotten a few sequels (Stepsisters' Revenge and SW3: Snow Harder). Next would have been a series of 7 "prequel/origin" movies (one for each dwarf). Meanwhile, we would also be getting a spinoff Huntsman series ... All of this instead of making other Disney movies.

Exactly, after 6 movies I'm sick of the Skywalker fucking family. Aaron Johnson was great in Breaking Bad, but I don't want to see him(or anybody else) imitating the iconic Ford role. I would think history would leave you folks very wary of prequel stories with this franchise. All we're hearing about these films makes it seem like Disney is just cashing in on the Star Wars name and doesn't bode well for having exciting new stories to tell.

The article says there is no direct implication that he will be playing Solo... if this rumor is even true.

He would be an awful choice for a young Solo.

So you're saying that Disney should just declare everything before the end of ROTJ off-limits?

Seems absolutely arbitrary, especially in a situation like this. I can't imagine that a post-ROTJ old-man Han Solo story has as much potential as a young Solo origin story.

There is potential for cool Star Wars stories at pretty much any given point in the SW timeline.

Everything featuring those characters, yeah. They should come up with new stories featuring new characters. We saw how the prequels turned out. A Han Solo prequel story would feature some BS with characters like Lando and Jabba that are just there to wink at the audience instead of further the plot, and there would be no suspense because we know Han doesn't die. For the record, I don't really want to see Old Han/Luke/Leia either.

if the prequels kicked ass, then people wouldn't care if the Skywalker clan was always at the center of every Star Wars movie between now and doomsday. Then again, if my mother had wheels she'd be a car...

If it's Han Solo, then I wonder if young Leia and Luke get their own spin-offs.

I was just thinking that it'd be interesting if the spin-off was about the Millennium Falcon itself, like the James Luceno book, as Fortune cover with the Falcon. It could cover the previous owners of the Falcon, how Lando got it and lost it to Han, etc.

I agree. He should be a black actor.

Spoiler:
Idris Elba

I always thought they'd do a R2 & 3PO movie.

re: Rogue One - Star Wars spinoff (12/16/16) D: Gareth Edwards

There's no meat on the bone when it comes to a Luke Skywalker origin story. The existing story dictates that he lived a dull and unremarkable life before ANH. It would basically show him doing farm chores and at best you could have a scene with him shooting wamprats in his skyhopper or whatever its called. You could probably repurpose all the stuff from the deleted scenes with his friends too but even then that's not a movie that would really interest many people except for farm chore enthusiasts.

Leia's story could potentially have interesting elements with the rebellion forming around her as she grew up but even then it could easily fall into PT-style beaurocratic or aristocratic boredom.

Han Solo, on the other hand, could be dropped into just about any adventure you could think off before or even during the OT.

I don't think he'd be that bad of a choice. He's a good young actor as proven on Breaking Bad. I wouldn't say that he's had the best film career to date but I think that's just the films he's been in haven't been the greatest not necessarily that he's bad in them. I could kind of see him as a young Solo.

I like Paul... but he is no Han Solo. No way. The only way to cast this is with an unknown.
