Well, at least it sounds better than Intolerable Cruelty and Ladykillers. (I actually liked Burn After Reading) ...and for some reason I keep forgetting they did No Country for Old Men and the remake of True Grit

I've liked most films by the Coen Bros. (including ones that aren't as well liked by most) so I think I'll like this too even if it isn't their best reviewed film.

My friend reviewed it:
He gave it a 4-star

While they are among the most acclaimed modern filmmakers of today, one of the criticisms leveled at Joel and Ethan Coen is how mean they are to their characters. There may be truth in that, but Hail, Caesar! certainly says a lot about their love for the movies. Set in the 1950s, the Golden Age of Hollywood, this film is a mystery-comedy where the mystery hardly matters and a group of loosely-connected characters serve as a tribute to what makes the movies so grand.

I've enjoyed all of the Coen's films to an extent (the two I haven't seen yet are The Hudsucker Proxy and The Ladykillers).
I think this one looks fantastic and although I won't see it in theaters (can't seem to get my wife to enjoy Coen Bros. films) I'll definitely buy it on blu-ray. Doubt I'll be disappointed.

Glad to see that the reviews are mostly solid. Not that I expected any less, it's the Coens. Will try to find time for it this weekend.

I, too, am really looking forward to Hail, Caesar! I have yet to be disappointed by any of their films (that I have seen), so my expectations are high.

I understand Ebert's criticism of Hudsucker (disappointed that the Coen Bros, while still fairly new, seemed to be treading water instead of progressing) but I think that's a damn good movie.

Guess I'm not seeing this since my local theater didn't get it.

Have to check this out. Even my least liked Coen brothers films are still better than most director's films.
Most liked : No Country for Old Men, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski
Least liked: The Man Who Wasn't There, A Serious Man
Have not seen : The Hudsucker Proxy, The Ladykillers, True Grit, O Brother, Where Art Thou? & Intolerable Cruelty
Most liked : No Country for Old Men, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski
Least liked: The Man Who Wasn't There, A Serious Man

You should definitely check out O Brother, Where Art Though?. One of their best by far. I really enjoyed A Serious Man though it is different (even by Coen standards).

O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Miller's Crossing are my two favorites although you can't go wrong with Fargo and Raising Arizona.

I saw this yesterday. They had the framework for something fantastic, but they didn't quite get it perfect. I loved Josh Brolin and even Clooney and many other actors, but the story just didn't quite have enough to make it super memorable to me. This is near the bottom of their output, but still worth seeing once. Some great scenes like the musical number make me wish they had made a musical.

I loved it! Not the best Coens, but that's an impossibly high bar. This would be a career best for most filmmakers, but it's mid-tier for Coens. They basically wanted to make a bunch of classic Hollywood movies; western, musical, dance, epic, etc, and they did, just little bits of each. Brolin's more than solid. It's not so much what the movie's about that makes it fun, but how it's about. It's exceedingly well made, fun, and just a little weird and off-kilter to keep it interesting.

I'm surprised it only cost $22 million to make. They got a lot of mileage for their money.

I loved it. While not consistently laugh-out-loud hilarious, I enjoyed every single scene. This also has to be one of the best cast movies I've seen; Coen bros alumni, bits players from Mad Men, Neumen from Seinfeld, Dolph Lundgren even!
It's essentially a "sketch film", similar to something like Monty Python and the Holy Grail where despite having a through line, the movie concentrates on self-contained scenes/comedy routines.
Crude question: Is Jonah Hill fat again? Was he wearing a fat suit in this or did they shoot it a couple years ago?

"Roman Holiday" is one of the very best Archie comics stories ever created, and you can read it at this link:

Fun but not great. Kind of Hit & Miss. The trailer did it no favors, making it look like a caper film more than it was, showing too many scenes, some from really late in the film.
Loved the Tatum song & dance number. That was kind of amazing.

I thought this was great, and possibly the funniest Coen brothers film of the last decade. I really, really liked it.
As an aside, sometimes I have NYC audiences for what they say as they're walking out. One person was praising the sound editing, another was saying the Art Direction was trying too hard.

I thought it was a bit slow in places, but generally a fun movie.
Robert Picardo stole the scene he was in.
