You have seriously never heard of google or wikipedia, have you?
Gambit's mutant power is that he can charge any object with kinetic energy until it explodes. His "classic" thing is playing cards which he will charge up and then throw them like a bomb.

I'm one of those kids who was introduced to many comic book characters from the 90s cartoons. Gambit is/was my favorite from X-Men so I'm pretty excited about the solo film.

That's not true. Gambit was popular enough to have his own solo comic series, just like Wolverine, Cable, and Deadpool.

Gambit has starred or co-starred in four mini-series:
Gambit Volume One (released in 1993) and Gambit Volume Two (released in 1997) explored the character's mysterious past and his ties to the New Orleans Thieves' Guild.
Wolverine/Gambit: Victims teamed the two popular X-Men on a mystery involving what appears to be a modern-day Jack the Ripper.
Gambit and Bishop was advertised as a sequel to the character's first series[6] and involves the two X-Men in Stryfe's return.
Gambit has starred in three ongoing series. The first, which lasted 25 issues and two annuals, ran from February 1999 to February 2001. The second lasted 12 issues and ran from November 2004 to August 2005. The third series lasted 17 issues, from August 2012 to September 2013.
Additionally, Gambit & the X-Ternals, published in 1995, featured a group of renegade mutants led by Gambit who has been living on the edge of law during the Age of Apocalypse. In 2009, Gambit's past was explored in the one-shot X-Men Origins: Gambit. In 2010, the one-shot "Curse of the Mutants: Storm & Gambit" was released. In June 2011, he began co-starring in X-Men: Legacy.
It was announced at the C2E2 convention by Marvel Comics that in August 2012 Gambit gets his own solo series that takes him back to his roots as a charismatic, cool, mutant master thief, written by James Asmus and drawn by Clay Mann.[7] When asked about the upcoming series Asmus was quoted saying "This book focuses on the two most important aspects of Gambit: #1 that he's sexy, and #2 that he's the preeminent bad-ass thief of the Marvel Universe."[8] Marvel canceled the series at issue #17.[9]
It was announced at the New York Comic Convention (NYCC) that Gambit would be one of the principal characters in the relaunch of the X-Factor series, All-New X-Factor. To be written by Peter David and drawn by Carmine Di Giandomenico.[10] The series will be cancelled after issue #20, with David suggesting that it would be some time before Marvel considers featuring Gambit in a leading role again due to persistently low sales record in this and previous titles

I liked him from the comics and the cartoon. He's still a decent character in my opinion, particularly if they spend time on his past as a thief and all that. I like him more then most of the Phase 3 solo movies that Marvel is doing
Also, I think holding on to whether he was popular in comics as a determination of how that will translate to a movie isn't the best idea or accurate representation.

If it weren't for his association with the Thieves Guild, Gambit would have a boring past. Thru a lot of the books, he was kind of one note, better in small doses of badassedness.

Channing Tatum Superhero Movie ‘Gambit’ in Jeopardy as Deal Unravels (Exclusive)
http://www.thewrap.com/channing-tatu...els-exclusive/
Channing Tatum’s “Gambit” deal is in jeopardy of falling apart and he is planning to exit the comic book project at 20th Century Fox, an individual with knowledge of the situation has told TheWrap.
The studio had been in the process of testing young actresses to star alongside Tatum, including Lea Seydoux, but insiders suggest that director Rupert Wyatt will soon have to find a new leading man.
It is unclear whether Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin will remain involved in a producing capacity, or whether Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will move forward on their own.
Representatives for 20th Century Fox and Tatum could not immediately be reached for comment.
“Gambit” is slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

Hmmmm... I wonder whats going on and if they'd bring Kitsch back.

I feel like one of the big reasons this moved forward was Tatum's involvement. I don't think there's a chance they feel Kitsch can headline the movie on his own for him to return.

Yeah no way this gets made without Tatum now.

Kitsch isn't really getting much positive press for True Detective, and both Battleship and John Carter bombed pretty hard at the box office. Plus, Origins: Wolverine doesn't have a good reputation. Could be wrong, of course, but I doubt it.

I really like the Gambit character, but I don't think he should get his own movie. Ditto for Deadpool. Maybe combine the two?
I'm much more excited about Apocalypse and New Mutants.

I'd love to see Kitsch back, but after Battleship and Carter I don't see it happening, unless it is a low budget thing for Netflix.
Also kinda weird timing with Tatum after all the Comic Con press.
Isn't it a bit late for that?

Truthfully I agree that Gambit isn't really that strong of a character to warrant a solo film so if this doesn't get made I don't care very much.

They are filming Deadpool now?
Maybe a Rogue/Gambit movie? No Rogue in Apocalypse and New Mutants... so why not with Gambit?

Yes. A trailer was shown at Comic Con a few weeks ago. The trailer wasn't officially released to the public, but someone recorded it on their smartphone and posted it on youtube anyway.
This Deadpool trailer is very NSFW by the way.
Rogue can't be in the Apocalypse movie because she wouldn't even be born yet. Apocalypse is 1983, and Rogue was like 16 in the first X-Men movie in 2000.
I'm not sure how they could even do a Gambit/Rogue thing now given Rogue's history in the previous movies. She was a kid and hooked up with Iceman.

Ugh, please no. The continuity of these movies is already FUBAR. Please don't make it even more FUBAR. To completely ignore Anna Paquin's Rogue and act like she never existed is a beyond horrible idea. Pretending the Deadpool and the Gambit characters in X-Men Origins: Wolverine weren't the "real" characters isn't so bad since neither of them were major characters, and the movie sucked anyway, but completely retconning a major character like Paquin's Rogue is really horrible.

It's even further off because X1 starts with "In the near future" or something similar. So it didn't take place in 2000.

Nothing precludes them from making Rogue "all powerful and stuff". Actually I don't remember what her power is in the movie universe so it may not be possible and still fit in with Paquin's portrayal.
