The Gambler - remake (2014, Wyatt) S: Wahlberg, Lange, Larson, Goodman
Mark Wahlberg plays the title character in the film, which is being directed by Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”).
Karel Reisz directed the original film, which starred James Caan as a a literature professor whose gambling addiction lands him in hot water with his girlfriend, his mother and some unsavory gangsters.
John Goodman, Brie Larson, Jessica Lange and Michael K. Williams will co-star in the remake, in which Goodman will play a Jewish loan shark, to whom Wahlberg finds himself indebted.
Screenwriter James Toback based the original film on his own life, though Oscar winner William Monahan (“The Departed”) penned this new version of the crime drama, which follows a similar trajectory. Irwin Winkler, a producer on the first film, will produce this one as well.
Paramount plans to release “The Gambler” in 2015.

It looks like Wahlberg has dropped 40 pounds for the role.

Interesting.
Didn't care for Wyatt's direction in that Apes film. Never saw his first film either. I'm iffy with Wahlberg. He doesn't sell me on movies. He just happens to be in movies that got my interest or that I was going to see anyway.

You got to know when to hold 'em. Know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away. Know when to say hi to your mother for me.

@Solid Snake: I remember liking the original very much when I saw it on TV decades ago. Caan is excellent in it. The script by James Toback is what put Toback on the map. This new one is written by William Monahan, who has a few demons in his own past that should help in the writing of this. The jury's out on Wyatt, though. He was great at directing angry apes, but how will he do with flawed humans?

The original is one of my all time favorite character studies, I'll be open to a remake barring it's not simply another 21, or typical Hollywood gambling movie.

I'm not going to lie: I honestly thought this was a remake of the first Kenny Rogers "Gambler" movie. I was wondering why the hell they'd want to reboot that.

Would not say this was a great film, and seemed to need to be fleshed out more. I thought the acting was exceptional especially Goodman who I think is Oscar worthy.

Watched this a couple of times in the past week and found it to be rather great. Not a fan of Wahlberg, but even he is good in it. Not sure about the Oscar talk for Goodman, found him fine, but nothing great. Nicely shot though and great music throughout.
