Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

Great little movie. I saw it at the Alamo in Austin. My interpretation:

Spoiler:
It seemed obvious to me the The Babadook was first created in the slightly disturbed mind of the son. It was no more than the ordinary "monster under the bed" that many kids see in their imagination, his reaction was stronger because he is messed up by his father's death. His mother's slow slide into insanity simply ran with it. She created the book (her former profession) and "saw" the crazy things that happened around her, feeding her son's already fertile imagination with her craziness. The book was only half finished with blank pages when she first read it. After it was torn up and mysteriously taped back together it had been finished (both by her). She even had black ink on her hands when she reported it to the police. The end simply represented her own way to come to grips with her insanity of wanting to kill her child.

Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

I saw this tonight, finally. I liked it, and while I understand the movie is more of a drama about a woman struggling with the difficulties of raising a disobedient child, I was alittle disappointed it wasn't more of a horror movie (in the traditional sense). What I mean is I wasn't very scared when watching it. Sure, there are some creepy moments (for me was when she was watching the newscast about a woman killing her son and she sees herself in the window with a crazed look on her face), but in general I was hoping to see more of the Babadook himself.

I also wasn't much of a fan of the ending. That last scene was just weird to me.

I did like it overall though. Good movie.

Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

I finally saw The Babadook

And maybe my expectations were too high due to the great reviews but this was the most disappointing movie I've seen in a while. Although the book itself was well done within the movie and some of the Babadook scenes were good, the movie had a overall cheap look to it that it seldom ever rose above.

And then there's the kid... that kid is one of the worst child actors I've seen in a long time. Yeah, he's a cute kid, but he just can't act at all! He is absolutely terrible in every scene!

And I do get the interpretation of what it represents psychologically, but that alone doesn't help the fact that the movie as a whole just didn't work for me.

(I'm so glad I didn't blind buy this movie!)

Yeah, this flick was dissapointing. The kid was very annoying. It's cool to see people got a lot out of this film but for me, it was just a decent flick. Having said all that though, there were a few cool scenes.

Yeah, I saw this a few weeks back and I was also underwhelmed. Granted, I don't think it was a bad movie, but I didn't find any of the characters particularly sympathetic and did not care what happened to them, whether they were being stalked by a boogeyman or just clearly insane.

I was underwhelmed the first time through (see my previous post), but absolutely loved it the second time around. Everything fell into place more on the second viewing, including the kid's annoying personality (and I gotta disagree with dhmac on one thing... I didn't think that kid was cute at all.)

^ I'm going to have to agree here, as much as I didn't think I would. Watching this for the first time was a tough slog. I hated that little shit, and I never felt a moment of tension. Got the BD today and popped it in tonight, much better experience. I was prepared for Samuel, and actually found he isn't so intolerable for the film's second half, and his behavior in the first - while still irritating as fuck - is important to set up later events. Still didn't find anything about the Babadook scary, but understanding what it all means and viewing the film with that foreknowledge made for a much greater viewing.

I still think it's overhyped, but it's definitely not as bad as I thought the first go-round.

I will catch it again on there. I must have been half asleep watching this um or drinking... as I don't recall a lot of it.

Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

So yeah, this was definitely a psychological horror flick and done well, but it reminded me a lot (a LOT) of Black Swan, without the underlying homoeroticism between ballerinas. I think that movie did it a little better.

And I took the moral of the story to be
Spoiler:
Acceptance and additional trauma fixes bad behavior
.

Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

My interpretation...
Spoiler:
I saw The Babadook as a manifestation of the mother's guilt over blaming her son for the death of her husband. The final scene was to show that she has now taken control of it. She has accepted that it's there and decided to acknowledge the feelings in order to try and live with it.

Re: THE BABADOOK (2013) (dir. Jennifer Kent) (Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman)

This wasn't bad, but it's the "Drive" of horror movies, where it's been so over-praised that it's impossible to match the hype.

My major complaints:

Spoiler:
The kid was so fucking annoying I was rooting for the Babadook almost from frame 1

and

Spoiler:
The "Home Alone" sequences were hilariously cringe-worthy.

I tried watching this just now. Didn't even get to the first scare (stopped when the mom found the picture all scratched up and confronted her son about it) because the kid is so fucking annoying that I didn't really care what happens to him or his mom.

Assuming this interpretation is correct, I had an issue with the way
Spoiler:
the film transitioned from the Babadook being an outside threat to the mom being 'possessed'. It felt too abrupt and zapped some of the tension for me. I think it would have worked better if there was some overlap and one aspect slowly dissolved into the other. I guess I just think they played their cards a bit too early in revealing Mom as clearly violent.

I watched the whole thing on Saturday night, and I really, really hated the little kid. He does get a tad more tolerable in the last 20 minutes, but I still found the whole movie to be a commercial for abortion.

Yeah after so much hype I finally watched it and the kid ruined it for me. Started FF to the end after about 30-45 mins.
