Vikander was on Seth Myers the other night. Mighty pretty that one. Talked about this one. Good stuff!

Re: Ex Machina -- D: Garland S: Isaac, Vikander -- 2014

Great film.

Spoiler:

I really enjoyed this movie and never got the impression from the trailers that this could be a robots-take-over-the-world type of movie. I like these films that take advantage of a slow initial pace. It was good but once Ava said, "Nathan's not your friend," that was just enough hook to keep me really intrigued and guessing as to what she meant by that. However some things I found a little unbelievable.

1. There are recurring blackouts that lock down the entire building but Nathan doesn't seem to bothered about it, especially considering that he doesn't even know why the blackouts are occurring.

2. Caleb rightly questions if Ava is programmed to be attracted to him, but doesn't entertain the possibility that she could be pretending to be attracted to him, or that she could be pretending in order to escape, especially since the first thing he sees upon entering the glass viewing area is a noticeable crack. This appears increasingly obvious (and dangerous) when Ava indicates that she can tell if someone is not telling the truth, and later, when she says she can accurately gauge a persons feelings by their micro-expressions, all of which makes her seem much more intelligent than Caleb.

3. Considering how much precautions Nathan in keeping the androids inside, going so far as to lock himself inside so they couldn't get out into the outside world, I'm surprised he didn't have some kind of weapons, or some kind of verbal phrase or device that could disable the robots or override their mechanical processes.

4. When Caleb questions his own identity-which was an nice touch-it seemed unrealistic that he wouldn't appear to be hesitant about slicing up his arm, and it doesn't look like he feels any pain which gave me the impression from then on that he might be a robot too. I was waiting for him to tell Nathan "I know you built me too."

Once Ava was shown to tell if Caleb was attracted to her I already saw where the story might be heading and that, combined with the locking doors set off by black outs that only Ava could cause, I had a feeling that Caleb would die in that building. I think because half way in the story reminded me of a short story by Philip K. Dick, "To Serve the Master."

Still, it was a great film. The performances, atmosphere and special effects were top notch and after a while the ending of the film made me think past the horror genre nature of it. Ava at first seems like a heartless machine, disregarding Caleb's life so casually but then I thought, maybe that's what makes her human, just like us. We have no qualms about keeping animals in cages, and scientists-at least in the film-have no problem with creating AI, developing relationships with them, and then shutting them down, terminating them. She's human because self-preservation is her number one priority and she's human because her actions are just as similar as Nathan's.

I also liked the mention of the Turning Test, which I remember from The Sarah Connor Chronicles-which was another good story based around the theme of AI. I plan on seeing Terminator: Genisys next week so I wonder if it will be disappointing after watching this film.

Terminator: Genisys would be disappointing after an episode of BattleBots.

Saw it at the local $2 theater today, amazingly 1/4 full for a 4 PM show. I thought she showed obvious intelligence in her ability to screw over anyone for self. I enjoyed the slow pace to think about that.

The ending wasn't what I expected the way things were going. Really good movie, though. I was left wanting more.

Re: Ex Machina -- D: Garland S: Isaac, Vikander -- 2014

watched it early this morning. nice slow burn of a movie... I didn't really see the ending coming.

As I was watching it I thought the twist was going to be that

Spoiler:
Nathan and Ava were robots, and Kyoko was the human, playing mute and dumb.

Just saw it as well. I kept thinking how much if felt like it was directed by Stanley Kubrick. Felt closer in spirit to his style than AI ever did.

I might revisit this for the Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge, as I wasn't really in a good mood when I watched this for the Academy Award Challenge. Therefore the first time I didn't really get any enjoyment out of it.

Re: Ex Machina -- July 14th, 2015

Watched this for the 3rd or 4th time and am wondering why Ava double crossed Caleb and left him trapped in the house to pretty much die when he had intentions on helping her escape?

bc she was just using him the whole time. she had no emotion/feeling/caring (all put on) like a human being Android. it was all to escape like she did. he was totally duped and she totally did her job, as she constructed it.

Yes, I know this, but that still doesn't answer my question. He was on board with helping her to escape so the only point (that I can see) of leaving him trapped in the house to die is because he knows she's not human.

that could be it. he could be a threat to stop her. she would never be detected as not a human. could possibly be left there so secret doesn't get out and who knows her true plans on the outside...
