I think they meant White Ribbon there. Antichrist only won Best Actress, which I think was pretty well deserved.

Palm d'Or Winners include Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now, All That Jazz, Paris Texas, The Mission, Sex Lies and Videotape, Wild at Heart, Barton Fink, The Piano, Farewell My Concubine, Pulp Fiction, Taste of Cherry, Dancer in the Dark, The Pianist, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, White Ribbon, Tree of Life, etc;

Runner ups (Grand Prix) have been Breaking the Waves, Sweet Hereafter, The Piano Teacher, Oldboy, Broken Flowers, A Prophet, Inside Llewyn Davis.

Blue is the Warmest Color was deemed ineligible for Best Foreign Language, but could have picked up non-Foreign Language awards if there was any campaigning done for it.

Looks like 3 out of the 4 acting spots are locked up with Matthew, Cate and Jared winning SAG and Golden Globes.

Caught WoWS last night, so now I've see 3 of the 9 BP contenders. Wolf of Wall Street was great, but I still think Gravity and 12 Years a Slave were better overall.

This is one of the few years where all the Best Pic nominees are actually worth watching. IMO at least.

Cuaron took the DGA so he's almost a lock.

Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread

I'm probably going to pick a split this year. 12 Years a Slave for Picture, Cuaron for Directing. McQueen hasn't won anything yet, but if he can win the BAFTA, that might keep things interesting on Oscar night. I think Gravity lacking a Screenplay nomination hurts its chances of winning Picture. Not to mention, outside of the visual effects, it's an extremely average movie.

I think with 12 Years managing a tie at the PGA shows it has some very strong support. A blockbuster like Gravity probably should have easily won a Producer's award.

After seeing 12 Years a Slave, I'm really hoping we don't get a split again this year. McQueen, and his film, both deserve to win.

12 Years A Slave will, at this point, win Best Picture without a doubt. However, I still think Gravity is the better directed picture by a country mile. 12YAS has better acting, writing and story.

I did it a few years back, the last year that was only 5 nominees, in fact. No fucking way would I be able to stomach all 9 in a row.

Don't know how you came this conclusion but this is not true.

Yep. Though last year Affleck had just been snubbed been snubbed by the academy.

9 is absurd. I can't even watch that many movies at my home in a day.

LOL. I've seen both movies and loved both but to say one was way better directed than the other is not true at all. 12YAS was very well directed movie.

Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread

Hell if you can argue that two movies are deserving of top awards in one year it's pretty impressive.

12YAS is really well directed, but could exist quite successfully with other competent directors. Gravity had what, a 10 page script? it is literally all directing, and with anyone other than Cuaron I don't think we would be having any sort of conversation about it now.

12YAS is a better, full package movie. Gravity is a B-movie masquerading as art, and it too is awesome.

That's why I said "almost" since nothing is a sure thing when it comes to the Oscars.
