Sinister Six is going to be an ugly movie for sure based on the track record of designs Sony has had for the rebooted franchise.

Yeah. I remember last year when they had on-set pics of Giamatti as the Rhino and everyone thought the suit would be fully realized in post because there's no way that was the actual costume.

re: The General Marvel Cinematic Universe Film discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

The Villains for the Spidey movies have generally been screwed up. They got it spot on for Doc Ock and Sandman...the rest of em.....not so much. Rhino was simply rediculous. The Goblin could have been so great onscreen, but the original was sooooooooo damn bad, and the Amazing Spiderman version was only slightly better.

Nolan in the Batman movie took some of his greatest villains and translated them incredibly well. They all look really great, whilst not feeling chained to the look of the comic book version. The best thing about these movies are the villains. Even in the horrible Dark Knight Rising the one thing that they got right (in appearance and actual characterization....lets leave stupid plots out of it here) was Bane.

Many of Spideys villains are iconic and could look fantastic onscreen. The Goblin really could be as menacing and terrifying onscreen as the Joker if handled correctly. Sadly, no one yet has managed to get it right.

I still seriously doubt this will make it to the cinemas for when they want it distributed. The fall out from the last Spidey movie i think has made them put the brakes on a bit and weight their options. Although the moving forward with the Suicide Squad might give Sony the balls to think that they can also hit a Villain Team Up movie out of the park. And we know what that answer to that will be.

Posting this in here, as these rumors impact many of the titles in Phase 3. So Massive Spoilers and Grain of Salt since this comes from Latino Review:

Those spoilers sound pretty plausible to me. I'm liking the sounds of where everything is headed if what's in those spoilers are actually true and it sounds like we should be in for some very interesting films going forward.

Faraci of BAD vouches for LR:

http://badassdigest.com/2015/01/14/s...ty-war-part-i/

Latino Review is saying that Marvel and Sony have worked out their issues and that Spider-Man will return home in Avengers: Infinity War Part I in 2018. The site further backs up reporting I've done, saying that Captain America and Thor will not be in that movie, but will return in Part II a year later.

I trust Latino Review on this. I know that their Marvel sources are good, and they've often been really ahead of the curve on Marvel stuff. I reached out to some of my people and haven't heard back - a silence that feels like a refusal to deny. But I do have to remind you to keep one thing in mind: things change. I believe that Marvel is preparing to put Spider-Man in Infinity War I... but they were also preparing to put him in Captain America: Civil War. The will to do it isn't the same thing as the ability to do it. Until there's a script for the film there's no way of knowing what will actually happen in the movie.

If even one of those LR rumours are true it will be awesome.

Sony says the rumor of Spider-Man appearing in Infinity War is not true.

Sony doesn't know what the hell they want to do with the Spider-Man character & franchise.

Their best bet is to let Marvel use the character for their movies and see what happens from there.

You'd think that Sony would realize their Spider-Man gravy train is slowly drying up and that allowing him in Avengers related properties, might get some buzz back about him. Maybe Disney can even help clean up the fucking mess they've made of all the properties they want to tack on to the Spider-Man universe.

Pretty natural for Sony to deny any rumors like that, especially since Avengers Infinity War is 3 years away and actually confirming something like that doesn't do anything to help them.

Well, they would benefit from new buzz and renewed excitement about the character.

Of course, if they just sold the character back to Marvel for cash and a percentage of the next 2 or 3 Spidey movies they'd really be best off since that would be nothing but cash coming in with no production or promotion expenses.

How does that help Sony right now? Their current slate appears to be a mess or up in the air, as far as another Amazing Spider-Man sequel or Sinister Six and Venom projects. I don't think buzz and excitement at this point in time does much for them alone, unless they have other announcements about the future of that franchise to coincide with any Marvel deal.

But its not. Sony is right to cling to the franchise because Spider-Man is still Marvel's most popular character by far. Spidey merch outsells anything Avengers related by a crazy margin and its unreasonable to expect Sony to see a Spider-Man movie as anything but a product that could potentially make a huge amount of money.

Except that aren't Spidey's movie profits (the only money Sony is allowed to make off the character) drying up whereas the merchandise (what Disney/Marvel controls) is what's selling well?

If they can't turn a huge profit with the movies they might as well get a good deal with Marvel to use the character again. The merchandising rights belong to Marvel.

Yes, but if Sony wants to keep trying to make a Spidey movie that lives up to the character's potential and popularity then why just release the character back to Marvel?

That's the thing: who is to say they can't turn a huge profit? Who is to say there isn't some magical Spider-Man movie that would give Sony another monster Spidey hit? As unlikely as that is you can't expect them to ignore the possibility that they could get the property back on track.

Its also easy to imagine a scenario in which Sony could be better off releasing disappointing Spidey movies than somehow making a deal in which they get a small piece of a good Marvel-produced Spidey movie. The Garfield/Webb movies still made them a good chunk of change. Even if they aren't huge record-breaking hits Spidey movies are still basically a license to print money and the property is undoubtedly one of the more reliable assets Sony has.

I still think it's a very remote chance we get anything more than a token appearance by Spider-Man in the Marvel filmverse. There is far too much money at stake for Sony to simply hand him off to Disney. Sony would end up demanding far too big of a revenue cut in that case.
