Disney's Moana (2016 - Musker & Clement)

Looks like potentially another slam dunk for WDA.
Polynesians are getting the Disney cartoon treatment in a kind of Kupe meets Snow White in the South Seas animation.
Just as American Indians were defined in Pocahontas and felines in The Lion King, Walt Disney has announced it's committed to Moana due to hit screens in 2018.
Hollywood blog Bustle headlined the announcement: "Disney's newest princess of colour is Moana, a Polynesian adventurer and she sounds awesome".
Rotoscopers says it has been in development for a while and is built around a girl, Moana Waialiki, whose father comes from a long line of navigators.
Needless to say they go on a long voyage. In a rough draft it looks like they will drop by all the points of the Polynesian triangle.
In a kind of "what could go wrong" moment, Disney says assorted Polynesian demigods will make appearances, from Maui to Tangaroa to Rangi and Papa and Samoa's Sina (with eels).
Bustle says Disney has announced Moana in the wake of Frozen, which it described as a movie of "overwhelming whiteness".
"The first glimpse of concept art for Moana was just released, and she harkens back to the best of Disney's past while also (hopefully) beckoning in some solutions to the problems that have plagued past projects," Bustle says.
Moana will be shot in CG animation and is to be directed by John Musker and Ron Clement, best known for Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog.
Inevitably it will have some hit songs created by Mark Mancina of The Lion King, Tarzan and Brother Bear.
It will not be the first major movie called Moana.
A 1922 film by Robert J Flaherty, Nanook of the North, is credited as being the world's first documentary. His second, made in 1926, was Moana, filmed in Safune on Savai'i in Samoa.
Polynesians have a long tradition of having their culture romantically defined by others from the noble savage of the 18th century, through several versions of Mutiny on the Bounty and the stereotype defining musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, South Pacific, which was based on James Michener's book of the same name.
These days South Pacific looks decidedly culturally inappropriate - and even now offends Polynesians, especially those mistaken for the character, Bloody Mary.

I seem to recall a couple scant days prior to Tangled's release that Disney was getting out of the princess game due to their limited appeal anymore (and poor box office to match). Then Tangled was a hit and wiped that notion off the map. Disney then revived the then dead "Snow Queen" and now Moana.

What's the story with Tangled's $260m budget? That seems unusually high, even for Disney.

The first comment I read about the picture on another site is that it looks like a Monkey Island game
Looks interesting though, Lilo & Stitch was the first thing that came to mind when I saw it.

Get ready for another Disney heroine to obsess over: Disney Animation announced today that it will release its 56th animated feature, Moana, in late 2016.
Moana is described as a “a sweeping, CG-animated comedy-adventure,” and takes place in ancient Oceania in the South Pacific. The film will tell the story of its titular character, a teenage girl and “born navigator” who “sets sail in search of a fabled island,” according to a summary from Disney. “During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore,” Disney reveals.
The creative team behind Moana, which is CG-animated, has some serious Disney pedigree: Directors Ron Clements and John Musker also helmed The Little Mermaid and Aladdin among others. “Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” Musker said in a statement. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”
There is already a strong Internet fanbase for the Polynesian Moana, who was previously expected to make her debut in 2018, and she serves as an example of Disney furthering representation of diverse and minority characters.

It’s very special to me because of my culture. I am half-Black and half-Samoan, which is the Polynesian side of culture. I am very fortunate to have such rich cultures in my DNA. And this will be the first time to present a story like this, with Polynesian culture and folklore. And no one does it better than Disney Animation.

I'm pretty sure they're going to tie in the redesigned Polynesian hotel in Disneyworld as part of this. As a fan of all things Tiki, I'm excited.

The renowned directing duo of Ron Clements and Jon Musker will be here to give a sneak peek of never-before-seen footage from Moana.
After making their writing-directing debut on The Great Mouse Detective, the pair went on to write and direct such beloved Disney classics as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules.
Moana is an adventurous teenager living on a South Pacific island and is the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. She sets sail on a quest, like those of her ancestors, to save her people. Along the way, she meets the legendary demi-god Maui who accompanies her on this epic adventure.
Set for release in the US on 23rd November and in France on 30th November 2016, the film will be screened after the short Inner Workings, which will also be unveiled by the film crew at the Festival.
