Looks like it could be a Matrix prequel.

I liked it and might even go on opening weekend.

A shame since the previous ads at least showed some promise.
I'm not really jiving with how this plot kind of plays out in the trailer.

I'll most likely go for Pfister.

This opens Friday and there isn't a single review on RT. That can't be good, especially considering the impressive cast.

Yeah, apparently there is an embargo on reviews. Not a good sign.

I've watched every single TV spot for this film for work, and from that I have deduced it will suck.

Also I spoke to several people who saw it and they said not only did it suck, but it's got an infuriatingly bad ending.

Not surprising. All the ads make it look like a steaming pile of shit.

I was willing to give it a chance until I came across an ad with this exchange:

Rebecca Hall: You can't fight them all!
Johnny Depp: I'm not going to fight them. I'm going to transcend them.

That's when I knew this was going to be a black hole of suck. All that was missing was Depp turning to the camera and winking.

The ads do make it look like shit, but damn I want to see it for Pfister's debut. And Johnny Depp is playing someone that's somewhat normal for the first time in a long ass time. And him playing someone that gets uploaded into a computer and wanting to take over the world is normal for him, so....fuck.

Here's my question, why do we think Pfister will be a good director? He'll definitely make it look pretty, but all I've seen is shitty hammy overacting by everyone, and that doesn't speak well of Pfister.

I don't, but it seems like he's definitely called in a lot of favors, so I wish him some luck. Although at this point it seems like Jan De Bont has the upper hand.

Probably not that many favors... Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas are exec producers and one would think they have a lot of sway at Warner

Good point, I was thinking in terms of the actors (and having worked with Freeman before) rather than the budget, but Nolan and Thomas certainly must have helped with that.

He also worked with Rebecca Hall (Prestige), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, TDK, TDKR) and Josh Stewart (TDKR) before along with Freeman.

Damn, how did I miss all those. Well, at least he has the connections going for him.

First batch of reviews are fairly negative (27% on rottentomatoes) but they aren't all out terrible reviews, it just seems like Pfister tried and failed to pull off what he wanted.

We don't, he just has a lot of good of goodwill from his work with Nolan and this awesome cast. And I have a certain affection for his batting for 35mm. I try not to judge based on trailers, but most of the adds for this have been mediocre, and the reviews aren't promising. Still, Pfister seems like a hell of a nice guy, if that's any consolation .

It sounded awfully ambitious for a first feature. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't sound like he had the skill to follow through. That being said, Pfister's name is all over the adds, is there anyone besides people like us who know who hell he even is?

I wanted to see this cuz of Wally but the more footage I see in the trailers the more mediocre it goes. It seemed too ambitious to begin with but there looks like a lot of mediocre dialogue. Who wrote the script?

I was just about to come in here and ask the same question. Apparently working for Nolan buys a lot of cred in some circles.

The original script, by Jack Padlen (?), was on the the infamous Black List a few years back. Based on the trailers, nothing about the story or dialogue seems that extraordinary. A few reviews have mentioned how the movie seems to deviate from the big idea behind that script, and not in a good way.

This script made the black list a few years ago, no one was blacklisted.
