Re: Pacific Rim 2 (del Toro, 8/4/2017)
His main problem? That fucker does too much. He literally produces projects and is in on them in the whole of production. He wants to do too many films. I'm still waiting for his Frankenstein film to happen at some point. I'm still hoping for At The Mountains of Madness to come forth at some point. I'm not entirely off of a Hellboy 3 happening at some point. His Justice League Dark is w/o him now. So yeah... this guy does too goddamn much.

I'd rather see Pacific Rim 2 then whatever else he's working on, but then again i'm not as big of a fan of his as most here seems to be.

‘Pacific Rim 2’ Delayed

Universal Pictures has removed “Pacific Rim 2” from the release calendar, but the studio insists that it is committed to making a sequel to the monsters versus robots film.
In a statement, Universal and Legendary Entertainment, the film’s primary financial backer, says that it is delaying the film’s production and release indefinitely, but wants to use the extra time to ensure that the follow-up is “the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves.”
Reports broke earlier this month that the film had been scrapped, but while hawking his upcoming film “Crimson Peak,” director Guillermo del Toro has hit back, claiming he is working on the script. The first film was originally released under Legendary’s distribution agreement with Warner Bros. It was a box office disappointment in the U.S., but a hit overseas, pushing ticket receipts to $411 million. That would have been a respectable result had the film not cost $109 million. A sequel may still be justified, but the film won’t be hitting theaters on Aug. 4, 2017, as planned. A new date has yet to be named.

Yeah, I believe them. They would crank out Mummy movies and Scorpion King knockoffs at a rapid rate but remove this from their calendar and are still committed. Sure!

Universal press release:
Pitch Perfect 3 has taken PR2's slot now. I honestly didn't know Pitch Perfect was from Universal. Still haven't seen them. Dunno if I want to. I didn't know PR shifted to Universal either. I thought it was still w/ WB?
The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having PACIFIC RIM 2, the sequel to 2013’s PACIFIC RIM, which generated more than $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of PACIFIC RIM 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

I'm amazed Pacific Rim exists at all: "Let's give a director who makes mid-budget art house horror-fantasy movies $200 to make a film based on two genres familiar to 37 people on the U.S." I am thankful for it every day. I get that it did big business in China, but I'm still surprised that they're even talking about a sequel.

I thought the first movies was fine, but nothing great. I also felt that it ended ok and there was no reason to see a sequel. Del Toro has much more interesting projects that he can be spending his time on. I would still love to see that Tom Cruise starring At the Mountains of Madness. With Cruise on board there is a much better chance of getting the budget needed. Hellboy 3 would be great just to finish the trilogy. After the on again/off again reports over the last few days i get the feeling the studio is putting this into turn around. Many sequels don't make as much as the first movie, and i bet they are getting cold feet. The first movie did good business, but not spectacular.

GDT via twitter:
I can't say much for her cuz I don't really watch the show. She does good in GoT, don't know her anywhere else.
Goddamn you, GDT. He's a man with all these great dreams. We were so fucking close to getting At The Mountains of Madness, w/ James Cameron producing of all people to do that for GDT. I still want his Frankenstein. I still wait for his HB3. I can't not like this guy.
Had lunch with Maisie Williams yesterday. Remarkable. Dammit- if PR2 happens, that girl is getting a Jaeger.

Weird. I wonder why del Toro isn't doing it.

I know I'm in the minority but while I love Del Toro's imaginative visuals, his directing is mediocre at best. Frankly, I'd much prefer a film that uses Del Toro's visual style and a different director that can create a great film using those visuals.

That said, Pacific Rim in particular I loved and would have really liked to see Del Toro continue with the franchise.

DeKnight is no doubt a talented writer. He was the creator of Spartacus and was the showrunner of Daredevil's 1st season. But he's only directed a handful of TV episodes. Really surprised the studio would hire him to direct this.

Look, I love almost everything about del Toro. His fanboy charm, his wild imagination, all the cool shit he's into, his designs, his fetishization of all things weird & grotesque, his unbridled passion...
... but I think he gets so wrapped up in the minutia of his projects it's as though story and direction take a backseat.
