It was a sequel. No reboot or remake nonsense. It took out 3 and 4, deciding to only honor the ones Donner worked on. Cuz that was Singer's intent. To only honor 1 and 2.

When Frank Capra remade BROADWAY BILL (1934) as RIDING HIGH (1950), he had several actors replay their roles from the original, including Clarence Muse, Raymond Walburn, Margaret Hamilton, Paul Harvey, Frankie Darro, Charles Lane, and Douglas Dumbrille. Scenes from the original were reused, often with some of these actors, so you'd see them looking 16 years older from one scene to the next. One actor, Forrester Harvey, had died five years earlier, but that didn't stop Capra from reusing his footage in the remake. Very bizarre.
Olin Howland played the teacher who punishes Amy (the youngest of the March sisters) in two different versions of LITTLE WOMEN, 1933, in which 23-year-old Joan Bennett is the object of his wrath, and 1949, in which 16-year-old Elizabeth Taylor is the one left alone in the classroom with him. You have to see the way he handles the latter to believe it. I can only imagine that this scene, simply bubbling with young Liz's post pubescent erotic appeal, got past the censors in the Breen Office because each of them, as they watched that scene, said to himself, about the others, "Well, if they don't say anything, then I'm not gonna say anything." No one did and the scene is there in all its glory.

I used both terms because the Donner / Lester films were used as more of a "vague history" (Singer's term) without specifics, and those films were originally scripted to be one divided in half.

George Peppard and Dwight Schultz had cameos in The A-Team. Although that's a remake of a TV series.

I realize this is TV, but Richard Hatch appeared in a leading role in the original Battlestar Gallactica, as well as a recurring character in the reimaged series.

While the "remake" the story of Evil Dead in the opening as a recap of what previously happened, Evil Dead 2 is not a remake.

Joanna Barnes in "The Parent Trap". The fiancee in the original 1961 and the mother of the fiancee in the 1998 remake.

George Peppard did an autobiographical remake of Ghost in 2010's The A-Team?
ALSO: Penelope Cruz played the same role in Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky.

For some reason that passed me when I saw it when I was a younger kid, but I saw this thing like 5 years ago and that's when I noticed that THE Shaft was this Shaft's uncle. Kind of neat, I guess.
