Kevin Smith has presented the theory that Willis only seems to care lately when the director of the movie is also the writer - hence his great turns in movies like Moonrise Kingdom, Looper, Sin City, and the M. Night movies he's done, and his less than great turns in almost everything else.
Willis has been in plenty of movies and turned in good performances where the writer and director were separate people; the difference being, those films had professionals who either wouldn't raise his ire.
