Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014, Scott) S: Bale, Paul, Edgerton, Weaver, Kingsley

Scott is very much an heir to the exhibitionist heir to a guy like DeMille, so I wonder how this will compare to the most famous rendition of the story. At the very least, it'll be full of special FX set pieces.

It'll probably be as ponderous as Gladiator. People need to stop funding Scott's movies.

That's not fair, we all thought Prometheus was going to be good.

Kingdom of Heaven DC was excellent. Everything after that has been mediocre to completely awful. And now he's talking some kind of Blade Runner sequel? No. No. He must be stopped, for the benefit of all humankind.

Didn't like the regular version and I'm afraid to waste 3+ hours of my time with Orlando Bloom so I haven't seen it yet.
Ridley Scott should have been a cinematographer. His visuals are really good, but he sucks when it comes to managing the story, the writing process and the actors.

I've said this several times already I'm sure, but I originally watched the theatrical cut and was pretty meh about it, but the director's cut is one of my top 5 favorite movies. It really is that big of a difference. You really should give it a shot.

+1
I've not seen the theatrical version, but Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is awesome.
I haven't even bothered to see any of Scott's films since then except for Prometheus, about which I had mixed feelings. I'll wait for reviews on this one, but I'm not holding out much hope for a good movie.

Only part of Kingdom of Heaven I've seen is when Jamie Lannister randomly shows up. Thought it was pretty cool, so I will have to check out the whole thing. Although Orlando Bloom has such a boring screen presence...seems like a tedious undertaking.

Yeah, Orlando Bloom sucks, the movie would have been perfect with a better actor, but there are enough interesting actors on screen at any given time that the movie is worth watching.

American Gangster was good. It wasn't perfect but lumping it in with the rest of those movies ? No.

Is the Italian BD of Kingdom of Heaven still the best one to get? I seem to remember that one having more extras and better PQ than the US BD from 2006.

Yes, it is barebones, unlike the packed DVD. Something similar happened to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. In the case of the latter, the DVD was loaded with extras but the BD had a couple of featurettes and not much else. The LFE was apparently filtered on the M&C BD as well. Fox has yet to re-issue either disc.

I decided to watch my Region A Blu-ray of Kingdom of Heaven and am shocked that the video quality rivals that of the best BD transfers today (even the so-called "mastered in 4K" releases). Despite being 189 minutes long and using an inefficient MPEG-2 encode, there are no traces of DNR. In fact, what I misremembered as DNR is actually the relative softness of some of the CGI compared to the live elements. There is so much detail in the transfer that you can not only see the individual thread of clothing but even each of the very fine blonde hairs on Eva Green's upper lip.
I really don't understand why the AVC-encoded extended edition BD's of the LOTR trilogy required each film to be split across two discs.

Well, as has been mentioned, KoH has very little in the way of extras. The LOTR sets, on the other hand...

Didn't the LOTR sets carry over everything for the 2-discs, the EEs, and those third releases for the documentary? I'm holding out for the mega-Middle Earth collection, but with the current pattern, it'll probably wind up being 24 discs and $200 or some ungodly thing. I wonder why Blus like KOH and MAC don't carry over the extras? Most of them are SD anyway, so I doubt it'd be a space issue. As for the two- disc Blus, maybe it was to maximize PQ? At what length does that become difficult to manage on Blu? They're pretty big. I kind of wonder why they didn't just cram all of the SE extras onto one Blu each instead of overloading with DVDs, but I'm glad they didn't omit anything.
