Yeah, I can't for the life of me figure out why the studio allowed this to be an R. It's not going to affect you or I, but it IS going to affect the box office take. I'm assuming it's an R for violence (and maybe some language) both which could easily be toned down for a PG-13, I'm guessing.

Sounds like more of the same heavy handedness from Elysium, albeit with different subject matter:
"Chappie is a bucket of bolts, Blomkamp's desire to say meaningful things outdistancing his ability to say them compellingly." Tim Grierson, Screen International
"You'll be told repeatedly in whispers and shouts, that Chappie has feelings. It's too bad that neither the philosophy nor the pyrotechnics on-screen in "Chappie" can distract you from your own sinking feeling that you've seen almost all of this before." - James Rocchi, TheWrap
"After the surprise and promise of District 9, this represents a further downward step for director Neill Blomkamp in the wake of the highly uneven Elysium." - Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter
"A robot-themed action movie that winds up feeling as clunky and confused as the childlike droid with which it shares its name." - Justin Chang, Variety

...a central character so frankly unappealing he almost makes Jar-Jar Binks seem like tolerable company by comparison.
sounds like Blomkamp is on the M. Night path

Yea, all 4 reviews so far on RT are negative.
I have tickets to a screening tonight and would go, but was offered a free ticket to the Rockets game. Going to that instead.

This is more Richard Kelly.
M Night had Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and to an extent, Signs, before losing his mind (at the very least they were all well directed). Blomkamp has had District 9, followed by Elysium.
That said, I enjoyed Elysium more than D9 so maybe I'll enjoy this. Though none of the ads have made me want to see it.

Looks like re-watching Short Circuit may be a better option than this?

[rehash] It would have been so much better in a different setting instead of Blomkamp force feeding us another tale in J'oberg. [/rehash]

I have Movie Pass so I will give this a chance. However, I noticed with Elysium that Blomkamp was not doing anything out of the ordinary in terms of story structure. I was pretty disappointed that the climax boiled down to something out of Mortal Kombat. This movie looks like Short Circuit mixed with Robocop.

It's just hilarious that in the trailer, Hugh Jackman's character (the "bad guy") is watching Chappie from afar with fucking binoculars and getting pissed. It's like Looney Tune or something.

Yeah, I think D9 is grossly overrated whereas Elysium for all its silliness isn't half as pretentious. Something tells me Blomkamp would be more at home directing cinematics for third person shooters. That's what D9 and Elysium feel like.

District 9 was a beautiful film imo. I wouldn't rule out Blomkamp completely yet regardless if his current film stink.

I agree, District 9 is absolutely wonderful IMO. But everything since has been nowhere near that. It seems that every film since has gotten progressively worse. At this rate, Alien will be worse than Resurrection.

Saw this last night. I consider it Blomkamp's best movie.
Like District 9 (and most good sci-fi), it asks a lot of questions, from the role of human error in police brutality to the influence of parenting. Unlike his first two films, however, the messages don't seem quite as force-fed.
That's because Chappie also manages to be Blomkamp's (intentionally) funniest and most entertaining film. The bulk of the responsibility of this comes in the middle part of the movie, where the rap duo Die Antwoord carry almost every scene with the robot, consisting of
And the Jar Jar Binks reference mentioned by other critics is way out of left field. Jar Jar had a pretty distasteful minstrel component and the character's tone was off from the rest of the film. That's not the case here.
I saw this with a friend who is pretty critical of movies called it “Absolutely fantastic” so before you make up your mind, let more reviews come in. I am guessing they will be closer to the user ratings on IMDB (mid-8s) than the current Metacritic average.

I'm one of the few who actually liked Elysium MORE than District 9, so we'll see. I already have IMAX tickets for Saturday.
IGN gave it a 7.6 out of 10.
I only mention them because they're a little more "in our wheelhouse" when it comes to what Sci-Fi fans are looking for in a film.

I only know what I've seen from the trailers... and this looks interesting enough for me to want to see it. That said, can Hollywood PLEASE do away with the slow-mo of the protagonists walking side by side, guns locked and loaded, ready to kick ass, rock or techno music playing and the baddest of the characters slowly joins them from off screen (in this case, Chappie)?
