re: Creed - Rocky spinoff - S: Michael B. Jordan
Rocky Balboa was actually pretty good and closer to the earlier movies before they became silly. But it was weird because it was too far removed from those movies. So through the 80's we get a new Rocky movie ever couple years until it's completely beaten. Then after 16 YEARS we can another sequel that wants to return to its roots, minus the major character that is Adrian. Now a further 7 years later they're talking about another sequel that might segue into another series.
I think this only has a chance at working if Stallone is strictly a supporting character. Still, it feels a little weird having Rocky be a supporting character.

And great point about Rocky being a supporting character.

Sly will have to be a supporting player because the story won't work if he isn't.
If the story starts with Creed in college, then they can't tell this story and have it make any sense whatsoever unless it is a trilogy.
I could see Sly not being introduced until halfway or near the end of the first one.

This actually sounds like a promisng idea. Kind of like doing Rocky V right. I think Stallone would love a do-over on the Rocky as trainer movie.
I'll go see it. I love the Rocky movies.

I would've been more interested if this had been the premise of Rocky V originally. I'd go see this though, assuming they learned from the mistakes of that film.

Here's a short article where Stallone himself claims that Rocky V was a mistake.
The one other thing that I really thought was weird was that Rocky V takes place right after Rocky IV with Stallone returning from Russia and still bruised up...but his 7 year old son from Rocky IV has aged about 5-8 years or so.
I do agree with the article that bringing down Rocky was a mistake. Here's a guy that we rooted for for many years, and everything that he literally fought for was torn out from under him. One of the cool things I remember from seeing the Rocky films in the theater was how the audience really got into the fight scenes. I remember people applauding, screaming, and cheering like it was a real goddamn fight. The street fight at the end of Rocky V was missing that factor that made people not only want to see the Rocky films, but to see them again and again. I remember watching Rocky I through IV multiple times in theaters, but I never revisited Rocky V until Rocky Balboa came out. It was such a let down to me and even though I've seen it again since, I just wasn't a fan of this part of Rocky's saga.
That's just my opinion though. Obviously if they had gone the train Creed's kid route in Rocky V, Creed's kid would've had to have magically aged more than Rocky Jr.

Update on this project. Looks like it's definitely happening.

Q: So one last thing, what’s coming up next for you?
Jordan: “Creed,” Creed’s another one. And also I’m just looking forward to doing these videos with AXE. Doing more directing, collaborating with them, finding ways to kind of like tap into temptation with their market and their audience and mine and find cool, creative ways to get the brand out to people. And I think they’re doing a really, really good job. So we’ve got some cool stuff coming up. You guys should enjoy it.
Q: You did just say Creed right? The Apollo Creed movie?
Jordan: Ha, yeah. You can’t just speed past it. Yeah, it’s Creed.
Q: Is that definitely happening?
Jordan: Yeah. That’s definitely happening, for sure.
Q: That’s awesome, I’m definitely excited for that one.
Jordan: Yeah I’m not going to let you guys down. I know that there’s a lot of Rocky fans out there and I’m one of them. So from one fan to another I’m gonna make sure we do a good job with this. Sly’s not gonna let anything happen to his baby.

I'm not clamoring for it, but it is intriguing. Apollo Creed is a great character, I can see this being fun.
So this will be a period piece right? Early 70's?

No. Michael B. Jordan would be Apollo Creed's grandson, and Stallone as Rocky...would be a Mick type role to him... it seems. First post has details.
