Star Trek Beyond [no colon] (2016, D: Justin Lin)

I was wondering if they were going to make a movie for the 50th anniversary of Trek--then I remembered that that would require a creative team that had even a tincture of respect for Star Trek as a pop culture phenomenon. As it stands its going to probably be another Michael Bay/George Lucas mash-up with pointy ears pasted on.

Shatner himself has been vocal about wanting to appear in one of these movies, and it seems like with professed Trekkie Roberto Orci helming Star Trek 3 he may be getting his chance.
I have learned that the script for Star Trek 3 includes a scene that reteams Shatner and Nimoy onscreen as Kirk and Spock for the first time in canon since 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It would be a pretty huge moment for fans of the franchise, and likely the last time we'll ever see Shatner as James T. Kirk in official continuity.
Will it happen? The movie is still a ways out from shooting, but unlike the cameo intended for 2009's Star Trek this appearance is plot-driven and integral enough that it might just survive any future revisions. And if it does, will Shatner - who can be prickly - agree to the appearance?

IIRC it was going to be nothing more than an old holo-message from Kirk that Spock pulled up to reminisce or get inspiration or some such shit. It definitely sounded shoe-horned in.

Or... Kirk has a negative reaction to Khan's super blood (maybe he gets Super AIDS) and dies. The crew have to travel to the future to get the Genesis Device in order to resurrect Kirk. STAR TREK: THE SEARCH FOR KIRK.

Everything I have read indicates it will take place well into their five year journey into deep space, and possibly be closer to the original series in tone. I just don't see it after the last one though.
I feel they are going to try and to cash in on the anniversary, which explains Shatner and Nimoy showing up, so I'd guess at one of two plots, or a combination of both:
1. All out war with Klingons/Romulans. Always hinted at throughout TOS and TNG but I don't believe we have ever seen a prolonged Star Trek war.
2. The Borg - Most popular modern ST villain that has never faced the TOS crew. Given how Khan was used I can't see Paramount turning their backs from this one.
As for Nimoy/Shatner, perhaps it's a flash forward scene of the new timeline and not the old one.

the more I think about it, the more I don't care how they incorporate Shatner. He's fucking James T Kirk man... he deserves to be represented in this reboot somehow. I'll swallow it even if it is hack-neyed.

Paramount will want to change the direction of the franchise back to its roots. As much as a lot of fans (myself included) want that they're more than likely going to cater to the mainstream crowd and make it more action oriented like the Abrams' films. I don't love that but I'll accept it. I just hope that the new film is better than Into Darkness was and goes in a more original direction.

2. Damn, there's a part of me that would love to see Kirk and co. take on the Borg, and the new timeline is really the only way that could be done.

The Borg could be interesting to see as villains but in some ways with it being the new cast I don't care as much since we've seen it done and while the new films take place in the alternate TOS universe we've seen it done and this isn't the actual Kirk and TOS crew. So I mean still sort of cool but its been done with other crews too so meh. If we could somehow have seen the original crew take them on that would have been awesome, but obviously that'll never be able to happen.

When rumors of William Shatner's appearance in the next Star Trek movie first broke, the original Captain Kirk took to Twitter to dismiss them. However, at this weekend's Wizard World Nashville comic convention, he had a surprising update.
As reported by ComicBook.com, Shatner told the audience that he had, in fact, been called by [Star Trek executive producer] J.J. Abrams because "the director of [Star Trek 3] has had an idea where you might be involved, so I'm calling to find out whether you would be interested." He added, according to Shatner, that the entire matter was to be kept entirely secret.
Soon enough, the news leaked online, prompting Shatner to joke, "I'll bet you J.J.'s frothing at the mouth at this point."
Talking about the possibility, the actor told the crowd, "I'd love to do it. But how do you get me 50 years later into the movie? I mean, how do you rationalize it? I know it's science fiction, but even I couldn't come up with an idea."
The third Star Trek movie featuring new castmembers Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana is expected to start shooting within the next six months, according to a recent interview with Quinto, with Roberto Orci expected to make his directorial debut.
