Re: Star Trek 3 (2016)

Seems risky on Paramount's part to go from a big name director like Abrams to a guy that hasn't directed anything before.

Yeah, and there has to be some up and coming talents who have directed before they could've plucked from (a la Nolan with Batman).

I'm actually kind of surprised Abrams got M:I III, his directorial experience was pretty limited at that point, but at least he had directed a few episodes of a show.

My interest just dropped to zero. The man is a terrible writer, I can't imagine his terrible scripts with no one calling him out on any of it.

And that's why Orci continues to stay on those Hollywood lists of "powerful" people. The dude has influence.

re: Star Trek 3 (2016, D: Not Orci)

I'm cautiously optimistic, Abrams brought some energy back to the franchise, but his love for Star Wars clearly skewed this perspective. Orci seems to be the true Trekkie of the group and might be able to bring back a little of the "Wagon Train to the Stars" that's been missing for a while.

True, but Abrams was also a much bigger name when he got that job and like you mentioned had at least a few directorial credits to his name (even if they were just various episodes of some shows).

And while the Lost pilot may've been made for TV, the opening sequence on the beach was movie quality. The execs at Paramount probably looked at the episode and thought, "If he can do something that good with a TV budget, let's see what he can do with real money."

My problem with that is that he's a crap writer. Abrams at least had proven himself with the direction. Orci and Kurtzman were the nerds and they couldn't get a better script for him. Soooo still not convincing enough.

Looks like Paramount answered the question of how can you find someone to make an even worse Star Trek film than J.J. Abrams.

Since Spock isn't lost that means they can't go searching for him so does that mean they will be searching for God in the third film?

I have a sinking feeling Trek 3 is going to be about the Borg.

If so I will be rooting for the Borg. If the entire Enterprise Crew isn't assimilated at the end I will throw popcorn and soda at the screen.

Orci is the new Brannon Braga.

I have a bad feeling about this (wrong franchise, but applicable here).

Technically speaking... He's been fucking Jovovich beyond these days. So that's nothing new.

The final frontier may be moving a little bit closer.

Appearing on NBC’s Today show, Zachary Quinto revealed that shooting for the third in the current Star Trek movie series may begin soon.

“I think it’s on the horizon,” Quinto said, adding that “things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months.”

The third in the series will be the first without J.J. Abrams, who is busy with Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode VII. It’s expected that Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the first two movies with Alex Kurtzman and this third with Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, will step in as director on this installment, although Paramount has yet to officially comment on the matter (Last month, however, Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the series, seemingly confirmed the news during an interview with the BBC).

Orci confirmed with fan site TrekMovie that the first draft of the screenplay was finished in mid-August, and had previously stated that the movie will feature the characters “closer… to the original [television] series characters than you have ever seen,” with the crew of the Starship Enterprise finally out on their first five-year mission into deep space.

With production potentially starting by spring 2015, it would appear that the as-yet untitled Star Trek 3 is on target for release in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary (the show debuted on Sept. 8, 1966).

Yeah, there is no way they are not going to release this for the 50th anniversary.
