Star Trek Beyond [no colon] (2016, D: Justin Lin)
Despite all the naysayers on this forum crying about what a "massive disappointment" the box office of STID was, looks like the next Star Trek film is a go.
Apparently, at this point, they are shooting for a 2016 release, to coincide with the 50th anniversary.

Excellent sources have revealed to me that the new writers for Star Trek 3 have been found, and as expected Bad Robot is hiring from within the ranks of past collaborators. Continuing with the first two films' tradition of having writing teams, the script for Trek 3 will be written by duo Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz. You know them as the guys who wrote the first Thor and who have a writing credit on X-Men: First Class. They also worked as writers and producers on Fringe, making them part of the Bad Robot family. They also have some Gene Roddenberry experience thanks to their work on the schlocky TV show Andromeda.

Not that surprising if you ask me. Despite not doing record breaking numbers or anything the new film did pretty good still and I doubt a sequel was ever in danger of not being made. Star Trek is still a name and the 50th Anniversary coming up makes total sense Paramount would want a film out to celebrate. I hope the next one is better than Star Trek: Into Darkness was though.

I'm for it. I'm one of the few who's not that attached to TWOK that much so I wasn't as miffed about STID than most people.
The writing team announcement just means the entire Abrams Team is focusing solely on Star Wars. And who could blame them? That's probably their dream project.
Hopefully this is a win-win for both franchises.

$225m domestic, $450m worldwide ain't bad. (the first made $387m worldwide).
Impressive even when you consider how bad the advertising was for STID (I like knowing what my movies are about, not just pretty pictures.)

I liked STID a good amount. Financially though it didn't do as well cuz there budget was higher. Still did good though. Marketing probably could have been better. Though that didn't affect me personally but Ivan see how it might affect the film itself.

My issue wasn't so much that it was similar to Space Seed/The Wrath of Khan but more the fact that they felt the need to retread on old territory rather than just make the film it's own thing. I mean in ways it was different but it kind of felt like taking those two stories and blending them together. I would have much preferred an original idea.
I still enjoyed it, will buy the Bluray. But I'm hoping even more now for a totally new direction for the third movie. Something truly out there and thought-provoking (but with enough battles and boobies to bring the crowds).

It seems like they sorta tried to make a new Khan story, but I think it would have worked better as a remake of Space Seed only, about finding this guy, and bringing him into Starfleet and the repercussions of those actions (basically the backstory he gives in the film).
The movie would then involve Khan leading the Klingon Empire in a war against the Federation.
If you're going to bring Khan back, then GO BIG.

Shit, that would actually have been excellent. Although would the Klingons really have followed an outsider like Khan? I'm not so sure.

If those are the new writers, I feel a lot better about them than Orci/Kurtzman.
In addition to Fringe, they worked as writers on The Sarah Connor Chronicles, as well as the 2003 reboot of The Twilight Zone.
Hopefully Ocri and/or Kurtzman aren't being considered for the director's chair, either.

They should at least have a tie-in to "The Cage" in the storyline (for the 50 Anniversary). Specifically, the Talosians and their power of illusion.
That would of course, predicates on someone of NuTrek actually having watched at least one of the 79 original series episodes. So, probably not.
