Yeah, unfortunately the initial estimates wound up being about right. It's possible it could make triple overseas... but even that wouldn't be enough.

All comes back to initial concept - there was just no way lifeless, lumbering robots (the difference between Transformers) vs Monsters could be a successful 200m picture. I didn't care for the film itself, but even with a more energetic pace and interesting actors.. it probably wouldn't have made that much more. You can have humans vs aliens, humans working alongside transformers, etc.. but robots vs monsters has much less appeal.

I think PR would have had a stronger opening if there was at least one bankable name in a Jaeger. I don't feel the film needed that, but to bring in the money? Yes.

I thought they marketed it pretty well... but like Artman says, I don't think the public is that enthused about the concept. I don't think the lifelessness of the robots themselves mattered all that much, but Transformers had a pretty powerful well known brand already, and robots versus monsters doesn't seem appealing at a glance. I agree that more star power in the movie could have helped immensely.

I wonder which studio will be next to give Del Toro $200 million to make a movie.

Disney. They seem to love overspending on doomed projects.

I didn't think about the lifelessness of the robots until you mentioned it but now I realize why something just seemed amiss during the fight scenes...and that was it.

I also felt the humor fell pretty flat during the entire movie. It tried to be funny but it just wasn't. Transformers had you laughing all along the way with great action and effects. The double whammy that everyone loves. Granted this movie wasn't as dead in humor as MOS. It at least tried to have some funny moments but other than one or two small bits, none had myself or the audience I was with laughing out loud consistently.

Star power could have helped some...or maybe just getting some actors that could act worth a shit. Everyone just seemed as stiff as cardboard. Now some of that could be blamed on the poor dialogue and stilted plot. But better actors could have handled it a little better.

But my 9 year old son loved it and that was all that mattered. I would have shit my pants for this movie when I was his age as well. It made me walk out wanting a big budget live-action Voltron film.

The theater where I saw Pacific Rim yesterday was about 2/3 full for a 10:30 A.M. showing. Not bad.

And the movie was fun. The crowd really seemed to enjoy it.

The theater I say Grown Ups 2 was absolutely packed. An amazing audience for an amazing movie. 5 Stars!!!

I did sneak in to catch a few minutes of Pacific Rim.

Spoiler:
I thought it was absolutely stupid when they revealed the Ron Pearlman guy as one of the monsters and he bit off Charlie Hunhams head. Bet no one saw that coming!

Also, absolutely moronic that when they ran out of building material for the wall the Charlie Day character offered his body for building material for the final piece.

However, the final shot of the monsters on the moon was epic.

Spoiler:
That description may not be entirely accurate as soon after seeing Grown Ups 2 I passed out in a euphoric bliss in the mens room after exiting the theater. Grown Ups 2 was that good! Can't wait for a 3rd!!!!!

Re: Box Office July 12–14 — Robots vs. Monsters vs. Grown Ups vs. Minions

Weekend Estimates:

1. Despicable Me 2 - $44,754,000 (-46.4%) - $229,237,000 Total Gross
2. Grown Ups 2 - $42,500,000
3. Pacific Rim - $38,300,000
4. The Heat - $14,000,000 (-43.5%) - $112,363,000
5. The Lone Ranger - $11,140,000 (-61.9%) - $71,101,000
6. Monsters University - $10,621,000 (-46.1%) - $237,760,000
7. World War Z - $9,430,000 (-48.8%) - $177,087,000
8. White House Down - $6,150,000 (-54.4%) - $62,963,000
9. Kevin Hart: Let me Explain - $5,000,000 (-50.2%) - $26.4m
10. Man of Steel - $4,825,000 (-57.7%) - $281m

Should have stuck with my original guess that MoS wouldn't crack $300m.

Pacific Rim has grossed a total of $91.3m so far worldwide (opened Thursday)

Looks like Kevin Hart is the surprise of the last few weeks. Still have to see that and Pacific Rim. Don't give a crap about Grown Ups 2.

I wouldn't say it's a surprise so much, his last film (Laugh at My Pain) grossed $8m and Kevin Hart wasn't nearly as big when that came out. He's huge now so it seems about right.

Ah, didn't know about his first movie. I'd seen him in stuff before but this seemed under the radar.

Yep, Man of Steel took it on the chin this weekend. It couldn't afford anymore 50% drops and it looks like it'll top out at $290 million. Nothing to get sad about however. Tack on a likely $400+ million overseas and WB should be very happy with their re-launched franchise.

It lost all of its IMAX screens to Pacific Rim. No surpise there.

I really like his style, but I hope he focuses on some smaller projects so he can continue to get money. At least with Pacific Rim you can see the money on the screen, but Del Toro can work wonders with smaller budgets (Pan's Labyrinth). I'd like to see him box in that arena for the next movie or two, before he swings for the box office fences again.

This weekend MOS will at least lose another 30% of screens to The Conjuring since it is being released by WB.

With The Conjuring, Red 2 and RIPD all opening next week, Pacific Rim will be lucky not to fall off at least 70%. (Conjuring will do the most damage... Although I expect Red 2 to open to around $25 million)

Pacific Rim lost 12.5% of business on Saturday. I'd say a 65% drop next weekend.

No one... Not even Disney.

Well, I take that back... There might be a Marvel property that he might fit, if the want to take the risk. I'd like to see his turn on Ghost Rider, but they may be too afraid to go hard R with any of the Marvel characters now... (Punisher, Blade, Ghost Rider, etc.)

good to see This Is The End inch closer to $100 million. It's at about $92 million after this weekend.

Kevin Hart also has a cameo in the film.

I doubt it. PR is making more in IMAX than MoS would have at this point.
