Need help with movie title - 1980s

So I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this thing. It was in the 1980s (I believe), and had a plot that included a suicidal teacher, and it seems there was a shooting at some point in the movie. I know the teacher had dark hair and a beard. Does anyone know the name of this?

Judd Hirsch is in it. He sometimes has a beard.
