Re: Who Wins World Wide B.O.: MoS or Pacific Rim?
Personally I think it's a wash between the two, here's my reasoning...
Man of Steel is Superman, and with all due respect to being the most recognizable symbol in comics, he has never translated very well internationally. He is still a very American-centric superhero, maybe this new re-launch will change that impression. - Superman Returns actually made more domestically than internationally. (Similar to Star Trek)
Pacific Rim is Del Toro, which has been pointed out, freaks out the internet nerds. There's hype, but actual box office returns domestically? Meh. Pacific Rim might be his first film to gross over $85 million domestically, but there's burnout factor with audiences regarding big fighting robots. Internationally, this should clean up, since it seems the general taste has shifted toward big dumb blockbusters over the past few years overseas. (I mean in this way... The US will go, "Whatever..." while the film still takes in a large chunk of change overseas... Sadly our example will have to be Battleship.)
Personally, I see Man of Steel doing about $250 domestically, and maybe $300 million internationally. (Although with the 3D premium, it might do $400 internationally.)
Pacific Rim will probably top out around $150 domestically at best, and rake in about $350-$400 million internationally with 50% of that coming from the Asia territories.
Man of Steel will out gross Pacific Rim world wide, but not by much.

Re: Who Wins World Wide B.O.: MoS or Pacific Rim?
I can't wait to see both but my brother insists that audiences will go for something "new" like PR and he points out that Superman Returns was very mediocre. Ah well, I see his point plus I haven't seen a trailer in a theater or commercial for PR yet. Once the ads start appearing the buzz will start building. Real Steel is a good example of the audience for Pacific Rim but that film was "dumped" for a fall release and not a mid summer one.
Looking at the upcoming releases, MoS has one week to dominate the domestic B.O. before World War Z and Monsters University hits the screens. PR might hit #1 it's first weekend as it's main competition is Grown Ups II, releasing the same day. Two weeks later The Wolverine opens up.
There's always a surprise hit during the summer and I think PR can be that.
Man, I've been using the term "scrilla" for years now.

I never thought of Superman being that big outside of the US. Pacific Rim will depend on word of mouth I think. Pretty close.

My wife teaches High School English. One day she asks me what "Scrilla" was since a student was using that term in class. I had no clue. Called my nephew to see what it was about. We've been using it as a running joke amongst the family ever since.

Man of Steel will easily beat Pacific Rim on name recognition alone. But I don't think MoS will be a monster hit either. The public just isn't clamoring for another Superman origin story.

I don't think Superman will do as well as people think, I just don't think it's a character young people really care about but we'll see.

I'm hoping Pacific Rim won't turn out to be the flop everyone here is predicting, but I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

I hate to say it (seeing as Del Toro is my favorite current director) but: This.

I don't understand the anticipation for Pacific Rim (other than the director attached). The previews make it just look like CLOVERFIELD VS. TRANSFORMERS.
