I had that complaint when Kinglsey was cast. But given the way the ruse played out, I guess I should be happy.

And if Trevor Slattery were an actor wouldn't someone notice him as he is playing The Mandarin? What a piece of shit! A guy sitting in front of me got up and walked out right after the reveal.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

From Kevin Feige and Shane Black (who apparently haven't read an Iron Man book featuring the Mandarin since the 60s):

Feige: There was no choice but to reinterpret the character, obviously. One of the reasons Marvel characters are still as relevant today as they were 50 years ago — longer, in the case of Captain America, 70 years — is because of reinterpretation. Because they often stay true to the core beings and belief systems of the characters, but constantly switching them up a little bit.

Black: Also, The Mandarin, as Kevin has pointed out — it's not like he's a classic villain in the sense you go, "Oh my god, remember that great Mandarin story?" You go, "Well, no, not really, do you?" "No, I guess we don't." But he's been around a long time. It's like Bob Hope. Everyone says, "Bob Hope! Classic comedian!" Yet for the last 20 years of his life, it's like, "That's not funny."

Look, they've already mentioned Demon in the Bottle and why they will never touch that material. It's too dark and frankly they're afraid that RDJ would fall into a relapse. It would basically be what Heath Ledger went through for Dark Knight. He'd have to transform himself and they're not going to risk that. The studio isn't, anyways.

Depends. What did Slattery look like before they made him up?

Well, I guess with the plastic surgery that he conveniently mentions it isn't out of the question. However, I find it hard to believe that a real person would play a "fake" terrorist claiming real world happenings.

Also, Killian IS the Mandarin. He had dragon tattoos on his body and all that. It was pretty clear. Personally, I don't think there will be any lead up to Thanos or anything. At least not with actual Mandarin the comics.

He was a junkie. They gave him everything and used him however they saw fit. Booze, drugs, money, excess, sex, women, etc.... He was a rock star.

Killian was a very lame interpretation of The Mandarin in my opinion.

What?

Again I think some of you guys are criticizing the film too harshly for having something you didn't want.

I await the BD and hope we get a Black/RDJr commentary. Along w/ a great making of for the film.

Favreau even suggested some of it in part 2 during Stark's crashing of his own party in the suit, but that came off really weak and cheesy.

But...RDJr isn't a method actor. He's a damn fine actor but that ain't his style. Or is it? DDL is a method actor, probably the most extreme of it currently. I've never heard of RDJr being in the method category.

A good actor doesn't need to do that. That's probably a damn good way but it's not the only way. Acting is lying essentially. Just lie convincingly. If it demanded it...I bet he could do it and it'd be just fine. I think you're over thinking acting and where or when certain methods can be applied. Some of the best actors weren't method.

Wait, I'm not saying that he couldn't do it, I'm saying that the material is too risky for him to do. Are you familiar with the story arc? It's pretty much what RDJ went through in real life not even 10 years ago. No way are the studios or wife (also producer) going to let him go near that material.

I know DIAB. I would argue it is more about it's unfriendly material to kids from a studio standpoint. More than RDJr. going back to all that shit he went to. Seems like the guy has his shit together, granted...he's a human being.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

I just got back from seeing it and enjoyed it. I gave it 4 1/2 out of 5.

The action and special effects were awesome. Especially the sequence where Tony's house was destroyed. I also thought the sequence where Tony rescued the passengers from Air Force One was spectacular. I would love to see the behind the scenes footage on how they pulled off that sequence.

A lot of humor incorporated as well which kept the tone light. I thought the pacing was good too. Did not drag for me at all.

I am curious to see the China cut now and how they incorporated the new scenes shot over there. I may have to get the HK import when it does come to BD.

Shane Black did a commendable job as director for this movie. I know he's more known as a writer, but he handled everything very well.

Loved the bonus scene after the end credits:

Spoiler:
With Tony talking to Banner and Banner falling asleep. Man, Mark Ruffalo looks really old.

It was interesting that it said...."Tony Stark will return" Are they talking about in Avengers II or Iron Man IV? It felt like this movie was basically a wrap-up to the series.

Was War Machine/Iron Patriot's new suit some kind of ode to Captain America?

Was this shortest Stan Lee cameo in a Marvel movie ever? I think it was a blink and you'll miss it moment.

Re: Iron Man 3 (Black, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it tonight, and fucking loved it. My favorite of all the Marvel movies, yes, even including The Avengers. I was thoroughly entertained throughout. I couldn't give a wet rat fart about the Mandarin. Never read the comic books, so I thought the little twist on his character was cool (and funny). In fact, I think I laughed more at this movie than 90% of the "comedies" I've seen over the past 5 years. The effects for the Extremis bad guys were badass...

The fight scene at the end, with
Spoiler:
swapping between multiple armors
was awesome.

Fuck the haters, this movie rocked.

Iron Man 3 > Iron Man > The Avengers > The Incredible Hulk > Iron Man 2 > Captain America > Thor.

It's an ode to an armor and story arc from the comic books where Norman Osborne (of Spider-Man/Green Goblin fame) becomes director of SHIELD and wears the armor.

It was filmed over the course of a week, using professional skydivers. I think they did around 30 jumps in all.

Now you're just making fucking excuses. They're called actors. RDJ doesn't have to be getting sauced, there's such a thing called Iced tea.

Agreed. And again, his motivation into super villianary is that Tony Stark stood him up on a roof top discussion TWELVE FUCKING YEARS AGO!

I mean, if you can't laugh your ass off at that bullshit foundation, I don't know what you are smoking.

They did get an Asian actor. Ben Kingsley just isn't the type of Asian Mandarin is normally portrayed as.

But I do have to wonder if Mandarin counts as a strong Asian character. He's basically a Fu Manchu/yellow menace type. That's a strong Asian character the way The Simpsons' rich Texan is a strong American character.
