Re: The return of Godzilla?
I remember the first time I saw "King Kong vs. Godzilla" and laughing my ass off when KK ripped a tree out of the ground and shoved it into Godzilla's mouth.
I will concede that the "2000" movies had some terrible plots, but I only watch the movies for the rubber suit fighting and the detailed model work.
"Final Wars" is awesome simply because my favorite Godzilla (2000 version) whoops on the 1998 version. I laughed with nerd pride over that scene.

I would love a new Godzilla movie, especially if he is a true bad ass. Cartoony Godzilla is ok and all, but I'd rather see him put a beatdown on everything. That clip above was pretty sweet.
I keep forgetting how cool Godzilla's screech is. I need to pick up one of those doorbells that plays mp3 files, and set the ringer to sound like Godzilla.

Always 2? -- I hope both Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfus are back.
As for Godzilla, no Matthew Broderick, no sale. He was the best part of the original.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
I'm not the biggest Godzilla fan, but I've seen all of them, and I'll second TOKYO SOS as one of the better of its series, both in terms of storytelling and special effects, as well as its immediate predecessor GODZILLA X MECHAGODZILLA. I think the shorter run times of both of these pictures were blessings. Many Godzilla films, old and new, are just too long for their own good, in part because the battles, impressive though they often are, take so long to play out thanks to such large, lumbering characters, and the dialogue scenes are needlessly padded, even dumbed down for the predominantly school-aged audience. MECHAGODZILLA and TOKYO SOS found creative ways to speed up both the exposition and the combat.

^ Agreed. It also has one of my favorite scores of all-time. I really would love to see Classic Media give it the deluxe treatment with both cuts of the film, but I doubt that's going to happen.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
It starts with Nick Tatopoulos finding the recently hatched Godzilla baby from the ending of the first. There are some soldiers doing sweeps for any remaining babies. Niko feels sorry for it and gets it to go down a sewer drain or something (I honestly don't remember anymore). Whatever he does it is a quick and efficient way to send the baby out to sea just before the soldiers sweep the area where he found the baby.
The story skips ahead a few years and we're at Nick and Audrey's wedding. Some guys nab Nick in front of the church and storm off with him. It turns out this group is a new team under the command of Philippe Roaché (Jean Reno). They brought Nick to the island where the radiation tests resulted in the creation of Godzilla. There too he meets female scientist whom he eventually falls for. Shortly after his arrival on Monster Island he somehow receives word from Audrey. She's pissed that Nick stood her up and she breaks of their engagement. Nick is bumbed out for what probably amounts to 5 minutes cos the scientist chick is a hotty.
Anyhoo, it turns out many creatures and plants mutated on the island creating a great amount of monsters. There's some terodactyl type creature that seems to be the dominant species on the island. And their reproducing in swarms. So much so that they may escape the island and spread out to the rest of the world.
It turns out the baby Godzilla that Nick saved is now fully grown and has made it to the island. It gave birth to one offspring for reasons that escape me. Nick also somehow discovers that Godzilla is the only natural predator of those giant terodactyl things. (I'm guessing it's meant to be a modern twist on Rodan.) Nick also discovers that the Godzilla creatures only reproduce once.
I'm a bit hazy on the details but I recall the baby gets injured by the terodactyls and is incapable of having offspring and its mother (the baby from the end of the first movie) may or may not have died in said attack. Also, the baby seems to have developed the radioactive breath of its Japanese counterpart.
That's all I really remember since I saw this many years ago and only now just remembered it.

If they do take another stab at an American Godzilla movie, they should use this script: http://www.scifiscripts.com/scripts/GODZILLA.TXT
That was the original script for the 1998 movie but it was nixed because it was considered too unbelievable or some such nonesense.

Yeah it's funny because for all the shitting on American G98 over the years, people have somehow let TOHO slide with their mostly halfassed G-films.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
I'd also be ok with them using something similar to Stan Winston's aborted design:

Still, it'd be awesome if they used that aborted design with the Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio script.

Is TOKYO S.O.S. really a good one? Of the Millienium series I have seen Godzilla 2000, All Out Monsters Attack, and Final Wars. Thought they were all entertaining, though Final Wars didn't have much going for it aside from the opening sequence (best in a Godzilla series IMO) and the last half hour of Big G wrecking havoc on the other monsters.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
I wouldn't mind a new batch of G films if they brought in some fresh ideas. My biggest gripe with most of the newer ones is that they were basically just pale remakes of the 'classic' stories.
Maybe something along the lines of the 90's Gamera films. Still rates as the best revamp of a classic kaiju character ever.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
No matter what they have to make Godzilla a real monster. None of this oh hey look he does cute shit for kids. The showa films until whatever was after Invasion of Astro Monster were great to show G as a protagonist but still a huge danger to humanity.

^ Agreed. It's cool to get us to root for him but he needs to be as much of a problem as he is a solution. Remember in The Incredible Hulk when Banner said that he couldn't control the Hulk but maybe he could aim him (when Abomination was devastating Harlem)? That's the approach they need to go with Godzilla. Have the humans find a way to herd him towards a bigger threat and then watch the mayhem ensue.

Re: The return of Godzilla?
Indeed. He's an uncontrollable creature. He's not just going to decide oh hey..I love humans now. The Heisei series, the first 2 for sure, really showed off G as a bad guy and it was great. The later ones he still destroyed shit too.

Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary
By Ace Fernandez
Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape.
Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.
Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project.
The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year.
But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences.
The new film is shooting for a 2012 release.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."
Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known."
The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday.
