JOE (2013) (dir. David Gordon Green) (Nicolas Cage)
An ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.

^ agreed. I was a little worried to click on this thread thinking another stoner comedy was in the works.

And his hair still kind of looks like a bird.

I thought they were remaking the Peter Boyle movie from the early 70's.

I really dug this one in Toronto - the crowd didn't seem to get into it but I thought it was a great film/performance. I was surprised it wasn't put out in 2013 for Oscar/IFC consideration - at least for Best Actor.

looks fucking awesome. For some reason it didn't even occur to me while watching that trailer that I was watching Nicholas Cage. He's a great actor when he wants to be.

ya it's a shame he's tarnished his image so badly by doing awful movies because whenever someone see a trailer with him in it they immediately think it's gonna be shit

Yea I feel the same way. Not sure what it would take to get me to see a theatrical film of his. But the sad thing is most are direct to VOD or DVD.

One of the negative reviews I read commented that it's like Winter's Bone but dark.
The other reviews are mostly positive.

Saw this tonight. It does feel like a spiritual successor to Mud. The whole backwoods, middle America
setting. Blue collar workers, etc.
Cage plays the titular character who's had trouble with the law in the past. He takes Gary (the kid) under his wing after seeing how hard a worker he is and how poor his family life is, particularly his abusive scumbag dad.
The ending was predictable
but I otherwise enjoyed this well directed, well acted film.
This was a great reminder that when he wants to, Cage is capable of providing a first class performance. I've always liked him and wish he would commit to more projects like this. I understand why he hasn't though. Man has to pay his bills.
Check it out if you can.
