Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

I'm skewing a little from the guidelines, but none of these films would EVER get made today the way they were then:

Fitzcarraldo
Aguirre: The Wrath Of God
Even Dwarfs Started Small
Apocalypse Now
Hell's Angels
Heaven's Gate
JAWS
Most Ozploitation films.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

I think most all mentioned would be released today. They may not get a major distribution and may receive a negative reaction, but I think they would all get released. Some scenes might not happen, such as animal cruelty, but that is different.

The Sentinel (1977). Michael Winner cast real physically deformed people and gratuitously used them as hell spawn in the movie's climax. Not sure if something like this could or would fly these days.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

I rewatched Private Lessons the other week, it really did go quite far for the subject matter

There;s been quite a few remakes of 70s exploitation movies , some of the Nazi exploitationers probably wouldn't go down well today but remember a Serbian film was made only a few years ago

While it would still get made as another installment in the franchise is coming this summer, I highly doubt Terminator 2 (T-2) would be allowed to come out with an R rating AND the label of most expensive movie of all time.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

When The Bad News Bears, (1976) was remade as Bad News Bears (2005), a rehearsal scene made the screenwriters realize that having kids spout racial epithets was now more shocking than shock humor.

More related to ratings than getting made, the MPAA said that if Paramount showed the kids smoking or drinking (which they did in the original), it would be an automatic R.

Given the current state of race relations, and our current president I will not watch it. It feels like it was made to persecute me today for the sins of the past, and Jami Fox's racist rant on SNL turned me off from it completely. I will see the Hateful Eight though.

Is this what you're talking about? If so....It's just a BS monologue or whatever. It cuts out but...I can't see how racy it could have gotten. Yes. He is so racist. Goddamn that black man for making jokes about his film and bullshitting about this and that. IF this

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1l8wDnOH6Uw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Watching what I can find about the reaction to it... seems like some white people were offended. Some guy at Fox bitched about it and some other white people were all up about it but...it's pretty innocent.

If you feel like it persecutes you... you've got some damn race issues that I don't even want to touch.

"Films that wouldn't get made today"

It seems like the whole idea of questioning if a movie would or wouldn't get made today are moot. With the internet and independent films anyone can make a movie about anything without fear of the movie being banned. You would eventually find a site to upload the movie.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

As a white guy, I didn't feel very persecuted by Django. Maybe if I was a very specific type of white guy. But since I'm not an 1850s slave holder, outlaw or Australian having my accent butchered by the director, it didn't really bother me.

Django didn't do nothing but put a huge grin on my face.

I watched Machete Kills, and enjoyed it, but wont watch the first movie on the same grounds of why I wont watch Django Unchained.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

A lot of films aimed at religious audiences in the 1950s and 1960s wouldn't have a prayer of getting made today. Hollywood isn't interested anymore in that audience. I am not talking about bigger epics but quiet dramas centered around Catholic life, for instance.

Seems like there's a lot of independently made religious movies coming out right now, so the market is still there.

There just aren't many religious people left in Hollywood willing to finance them.

What are the chances of "Kentucky Fried Movie" ever being made today?

Hollywood doesn't fund anything that isn't a giant spectacle anymore. Religious movies are alive and well though. Most are just really, really bad.

with the dearth of creativity in Hollywood, i would hesitate to say that nothing, really and sadly, wouldn't get made today.

Re: Films that wouldn't get made today

Stranger By the Lake was critically well received last year. Also, Heaven is for Real was reasonably well done for what it was.

But by and large I agree, you get every tom dick and harry out there trying to make a message movie on a shoestring budget. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
