Large format cameras, probably.

Kodak have made many claims about film's resolution, I've usually heard 4K, but sometimes up to 6K. Obviously, it also depends on the stock, scanning lines, etc. Big plates apparently even measure up to HDR at their best because of layering. I have heard about the Alexa 65 and the Red Dragon though. Doesn't 15/70 come to about 16K? Apparently it's so expensive to develop that even for films shot in 15/70, IMAX is going to do more or less all digital distribution once the laser system is ready. I think the sad reality is that whatever proponents of film may say, it's borrowed time at this point. Digital is pretty much capable of doing almost anything film can, frequently at higher resolutions, and what it can't match, it's likely to be able to shortly. Film has had over a hundred years to develop (no pun intended) its capabilities, and digital is catching up rapidly, I think it's all over but the crying at this point. I get the distinct sense this film will likely be celluloid' last stand.

Anyway, the marketing department are being rather vague about what the trailers reveal, and I think that's a good thing. It'll have to have the requisite set pieces and spectacle, but maybe this will largely be a proper harder sci-fi affair.

American Cinematographer awhile back did a story about IMAX /Dark Knight /15-70mm and 35mm film resolution, and they stated 35mm resolution was definitely 'higher' than 4K.

It's unquestionably higher resolution than 4k. 35mm like almost anything analog isn't and will never be completely matched by anything digital, but we can get damn close or go artificially sharper.

Beautiful.

I really liked the font they used for the..."this video contains content from paramount who has blocked it on copyright grounds".

EW has an article about the movie in its most recent issue. It does confirm that
Spoiler:
Jessica Chastain is McConnaghey's daughter.
Though I doubt many see that as a spoiler.

I'll be damned, a couple of local multiplexes are actually doing the 35mm screenings! No 70mm , but there's an IMAX 15/70 ! This'll be celluloid's last stand, so it'll be nice to be a part of the fight. Bet this'll be the last wide 15/70 release before the laser systems go in too .

EDIT: Lying fucking website, none of the multiplexes got the 35mm .

This might be getting some competition from Big Hero 6 opening weekend. Granted, they're totally different movies aimed a totally different audiences, but there's a good chance many movie buffs with kids will opt for the Disney offering.

Got to applaud how Nolan's movies can keep a secret.

Without digging up some "underground" internet information, I really don't know where the movie is going to go. Earth is a dust bowl. Main characters go looking for another planet to live on. And it's three hours.

Whether it is or not, that info can also be found by checking out IMDB's cast page, as well as ...

Spoiler:
Ellen Burstyn playing Old Murph.

Or they are looking for a resource that we could use

Not surprising. The guy gets it right for a lot of people. I admire what he does a lot. And I like his stuff for the most part. I do wish though he'd go lower in budget and do something along the lines of how strong The Prestige was. That movie is his best movie for me. Damn thing is a twisted motherfucker.

Re: Interstellar (2014) (D: Nolan; S: McConaughey, Chastain, Hathaway, Caine, Bursty

Help me out folks. I can take a roughly 2 hour drive to 3 different locations to check this out. All right at about 120 miles. Now Nashville and Buford, Ga have the 70mm IMAX, but the Space Center in Huntsville has a 70mm dome IMAX.

Would the domed IMAX make it look wonky or would the dome be a bonus?

The only regular 70mm film showing near relatively close to me is some other theater in Atlanta.

The IMAX dome will make it look a wonky, or at least hard to follow (you won't be able to see the entire screen at once). A standard IMAX screen would be better.

This is probably something better for Supermallet to answer but....

I don't see how a domed image would help. Film is a flat image. Usually made to be that way.

I'd go with a Flat IMAX image.

Re: Interstellar (2014) (D: Nolan; S: McConaughey, Chastain, Hathaway, Caine, Bursty

I wonder if those preview crowds were the same people who said INCEPTION (which I did not care for...at least not the way everyone else did) was the best thing since sliced bread.

This movie sounds like it's going to be more like CONTACT (which I loved but most hated) than, say, STAR TREK - so I'm expecting a lot of backlash from people saying how bored they were with it. When I hear things like "great in IMAX" and "a poem to light and gravity" I wonder how many of these people were just wowed by the visuals and didn't notice if the story was actually any good. We'll see (keeping fingers crossed).

Re: Interstellar (2014) (D: Nolan; S: McConaughey, Chastain, Hathaway, Caine, Bursty

A dome is fine if you get proper seating, I saw the Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises on an IMAX dome, each film twice. I got there late for the first showing both times and sat in the front where the image was distorted and disorienting. For the second showing I was near the front of the line and sat all the way at the top/back, in the center, and the image was glorious.
