Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Back To The Future depressed since I remember taking who is now my wife on a date to see this movie. Actually being 1985 we were probably engaged when this came out.

Heartbreak Kid Yes an HD DVD. I wanted to make sure the player still worked. I always enjoy this movie. Malin Akerman was fearless and Michelle Monaghan is the perfect girl next door type. My only complaint was it did get a little long when he got stuck in Mexico. They should have shortened that sequence to keep things moving.

Fish Tank - 4/5

British film about a rebellious lower class 15 year old delinquent living with her single mother and younger sister, who dreams of one day being a professional dancer. One day her life changes when she meets her mother's new boyfriend and becomes attracted to him. Gritty kitchen-sink verite style drama in the spirit of Mike Leigh and Ken Loach with a little 400 Blows thrown in the mix. Some strong intense acting from all the main characters, especially Katie Jarvis.

Évocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie on CNN.

I never watched his show but it was fun to relive 80's history. He was more of a performer and I wonder if he really believed in the stuff he said and I doubt he was a true conservative.

Appropriate Behavior on Cinemax. A Persian lesbian.

New Tale of Zatoichi (1963)
First of the Zatoichi films to be in colour and works wonderfully. Plot wise is not much different from previous films and I get a sense that it won't change in the latter ones too. Ichi is back in his old village and meets his teacher Banno. Ichi and his teacher's sister are in love but his teacher derides him for being a gambler and a crippled and reject their proposal for marriage. Banno is also involved in a kidnapping plot and just let's say that it won't end well for all parties involved. Love Shintaro Katsu portrayal of Zatoichi and is the main reason why I will be sticking with film series.

Red 2 (2013)
Not as fun as the first movie but is still enjoyable. The cast seems to be having fun and enjoying themselves. I was just wondering how a movie with a high body count is rated PG. Is it because of the no blood on screen?

Mostly okay month:

Spoiler:
Honey I Blew Up the Kid
Desperate
Young Tiger
The Great Garrick
Afro-Punk (Wished it was longer)
Black Widow (1954) (If Douglas Sirk did a dark crime movie, it might've looked like this)
Emperor (2003)
N.Y.C. Underground
Daughter of the Dawn
Winnebago Man

The Good Son
You Can Count On Me
Django Defies Sartana
(Even though the roles should have been reversed)
The Ipcress File
Death Duel
Southland Tales
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love (Came close to liking)
Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief (Best movie of the month)
The Drum
Mr. Turner (Only liked the 2nd half)
Bustin’ Loose
Foxcatcher
I'm A Cyborg, But That's Okay
Go with God, Gringo
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
SuicideGirls:Relaunch
Fist of Anger
Chicago Confidential
Maps to the Stars (Can't recommend it to everyone though)
Straight Outta Compton
The Deadly Breaking Sword
The Savages (2007)
The Devil’s Messenger
Hell's Angels (1930)
Crips and Bloods: Made in America (It's good, but it's not really about gangs AT ALL)
Shaolin Prince
Two Days, One Night
(I would've liked it more if she spoke to more co-workers who didn't have any kids to support)
Kill Django…Kill First
Exodus
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
Sumurun
Phil Spector (I was really surprised at how FAST this one moved!)
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
Control (2007)
Wichita
Magnificent Bodyguards
The Cruise (Speed's the man)
Freebie and the Bean
A Foreign Affair
Vampire Vixens
Ingeborg Holm
Shanghai Express
A Man There Was
A Gun for One Hundred Graves
Michael Clayton (Just for the acting)
Slice and Dice: The Slasher Film Forever (Not as strong a narrative as Going to Pieces, but this one gets a lot of points for allowing WAY more clips)
The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond
Seven Years in Tibet (Actually liked the first act a lot. Came apart quite badly down the stretch)
The Pirate Fairy
Tabu
Dragon Fist
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Finding Vivian Maier
Wild Orchids
The Singing Ringing Tree
Penguins of Madagascar
A Woman of Affairs
Fear of Fear (Best Fassbender I've seen in awhile. Almost like his version of Woman Under The Influence)

Happy in the Valley
The Illusionist
Romance

Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
Very disappointing effort after "The Muppets (2011)". I guess expected more out of it and the plot with the Bad version of Kermit was lame. However, I liked some of the musical numbers of the movie especially the one with Miss Piggy and Celine Dion.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I did a Stephen Chow Double Header with God of Cookery (1996) first and King of Comedy (1999) second.

God of Cookery is near perfect for me. It was a perfect combination of humour, food and martial arts. I just wished that the version that Netflix had, used subtitles for the written part of the movie because I might have missed a few jokes there.

King of Comedy was a different Stephen Chow effort. The humour is still there but this was more of a drama. I didn't mind it but those looking for the action comedy of his, will be disappointed.

Berberian Sound Studio - 2.5/5

For his next film project a British sound engineer travels to Italy. While there he works on a Eurohorror film that's a cross between Mark of the Devil and Suspiria. Working under strenuous conditions and amongst a group of shady people, he starts to lose grip on his sanity. A disappointing film that has all the right ingredients (acting, atmosphere, cinematography, etc....) but is ultimately let down by a story that goes nowhere.

The Sacrament - 4/5

Ti West's chilling modern day retelling of the Jonestown massacre. Although I found it a bit exploitative it was still very effective in the way it puts the audience right in the middle of this sad horrific tragedy, and shows us how the weak can be easily manipulated by someone they believe holds the key to their happiness. With an excellent overlooked performance by Gene Jones as the charismatic leader.

Lovesick

Chevy Chase was a perv in this movie and maybe he had the only funny scenes.

The Wedding Ringer with Kevin Hart and Josh Gad. Thought it was really funny. Lots of laughs.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. I really enjoyed the Hobbit trilogy. I found it more watchable than the LOTR trilogy.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

I enjoyed the first one enough to check this one out. The wife was laughing quite a bit but I thought it was rather bland. Someone else also mentioned the daughter. Is Manny's (from Modern Family) sister. Doesn't have his charm and her looks obviously can't carry her. Hope this franchise is done but since they make them on the cheap and they make money I'm sure we'll see a third. If Adam Sandler keeps making his crap, they'll give Kevin James more at a fraction of the price.

For some reason I though this was an action movie when I picked it up. Good drama and suspense however.

We Are the Best! - 2.5/5

1982, three Swedish 13 year olds decide to start a punk band despite the fact that two of them have no knowledge of music or how to play an instrument.
Pretty tame for a Lukas Moodysson film and a little too cute for my tastes. I'm going to watch Penelope Spheeris' Suburbia to get this one out of my head.
