Mad Max and The Road Warrior were pure George Miller. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome feels like a bizarre collaboration between Miller, Steven Spielberg, and Terry Gilliam. I hate it for what it isn't and love it for what it is.

Doomsday (2008)

I know this one got a lot of mixed reviews, but I love it. Mash-up of a bunch of genres I enjoy into a very fun film.

It is not a Mad Max movie and insulating they call it so , yet if it was not that then it would be a pretty good 80s scifi flick.

The Evil Dead (1981) - 3/5

Sam Raimi's low budget debut about a group of college students on vacation in rural Tennesse. When spending the night in a cabin they discover a tape recording with ancient incantations used to bring back the dead. Good horror film that IMO has lost some of its impact 30+ years later.

Night of the Living Dead (1968) - 5/5

The dead are coming back to life with an appetite for flesh and they are after seven people who are fighting for their lives in a boarded up house. One of the all time greatest (subversive) horror films that has a lot to say about the political and social climate of the era. The one that put George A. Romero and flesh eating zombies on the map.

Someone wrote this on letterboxd that I liked :

Spoiler:
Dear 1968:

We made a film that has the following:

-Female protagonist.
-Whoops! Now an African-American protagonist.
-It is in black & white.
-It's all in one night! All in one one house!
-We wait forever to even kind of tell you what's going on
-People eat other people! You even get to see it!
-Women die!
-Kids die!
-Kids kill their folks!
-Brothers kill sisters!
-Wait, everyone dies!
-Whatever was happening has no conclusion!

Please enjoy our film,

George A. Romero

The Battery (2012)

Some good bits of humor and character interaction from the leads, but the film is in need of some editing. It comes off too much like an Indie Road/Travel film where scenes drag on way too long. There are so many times I can watch two leads do nothing with a 'hip' soundtrack blaring overhead. It's not the masterpiece some reviews said it was, even if it is a slightly different take on the Zombie sub-genre.

Blue Ruin (2013)

As a Revenge/Thriller, I really enjoyed this one. It's lean and shot beautifully. It was nice to see a Revenge/Thriller film concerning an 'every man'.

It's not perfect, as there are some pacing issues and a supporting cast that is written pretty thin.

Unnecessary but excellent sequel. Hackman is, as always, brilliant.

Mood Indigo (2013)

Far from Michel Gondry's strongest work, but you'd be hard pressed to find a film that looks & feels like this one. It's an overdose of rainbows & whimsy!

Spirit of the Beehive- Fascinating, frustrating, slow, but often hypotonic Spanish art film about a little girl under the fascist Franco regime who loses her innocence to the heavy weight of the monstrous regime. It's a quiet, subtle film, and though director Victor Erice cites Ozu as a big influence, it feels like Malick with a bit of Haneke. Though acknowledged as a major influence on Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, and though it shares a number of similarities, it's a subtler, more melancholy film without any of del Toro's uplift. I was reminded of Haneke in the film's depiction of fascism's suffocating banality, characters going about their lives mechanically as creativity and reasons for living are bled away. Though the film shies away from any real violence, the atmosphere is genuinely oppressive, and highlights evil's way of taking away hope and innocence. A bit slow, but I'm not convinced I'd say "dull." I don't feel I fully acclimated to the film's pace, somehow waiting for it to "get going" as though it were a regular film. I think a second viewing is in order after some reading. As a quick side note, there's a wonderful scene where a group of children away cans of 35mm at a traveling cinema, whisked off into the world of movies through the clicking projector. Sadly, with the recent announcement of film's final death knell, it's a reminder of a vanished magic in more ways than one, and adds another sad layer to a film about loss .

Lord of Tears (2013)

Bored me to tears. As a Horror/Mystery this one is completely passable. It tries too hard to hide it's shortcomings with music video style cuts & editing. At least Alexandra Hulme is easy on the eyes!

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

In hindsight, this movie is kind of hilarious. Tom Cruise getting recruited by the firm feels like him getting recruited by the Church of Scientology, with everyone there seeming a little too nice and a little too willing to solve all his problems just a little too easily, and his wife keeps telling him that it all seems a little weird.

It's a half-decent thriller ruined by its director. Sydney Pollack wasn't remotely the right person for this movie. He has no idea how to stage a chase scene, and I'm baffled by his insistence that the movie have an all-piano soundtrack that's far too jaunty and makes the whole thing feel like an episode of Maude. I kept thinking of how much better it would be if they replaced it with the music from The Fugitive.

The half-decent part comes from the cast, who make the movie work despite itself. Cruise and Jeanne Tripplehorn are adequate at best (their dialogue came straight from the Cute Romantic Hollywood Couple Handbook), but Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, Wilford Brimley, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Steven Hill, and David Strathairn could make anything watchable. Gary Busey plays Gary Busey, and Tobin Bell plays Creepy Villain #368. They're fine.

It's a bland, mediocre, un-thrilling "thriller" with an all-star cast. I'm surprised it wasn't nominated for Best Picture. It was, however, nominated for Best Music, which kind of makes me want to die.

Here's hoping the TV show, which I'll be watching on DVD soon, will be better.
