Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (Theron) - news, rumors, cast
Charlize Theron finds 'Sympathy for Lady Vengeance'
Theron will star in, co-produce film adaptation
By Jeff Sneider
Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures is partnering with Charlize Theron's Denver & Delilah Films and CJ Entertainment to produce William Monahan's adaptation of Park Chan-wook's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance."
Annapurna will finance the pic, while Panorama Media will handle international sales.
Theron will star as well as produce with Denver & Delilah partner Beth Kono; Annapurna's Ellison and Chelsea Barnard; CJ Entertainment's Ted Kim; and Monahan. Justine Suzanne Jones of Henceforth Pictures, AJ Dix of Denver & Delilah, Ted Schipper of Annapurna and Miky Lee of CJ Entertainment will exec produce. Ellison and Annapurna Pictures will finance the film.
The third film in Park's acclaimed revenge trilogy, "Lady Vengeance" follows a woman who, for reasons of her own, completes a prison term for a murder she did not commit, re-emerging to punish the killer and avenge the dead.
"This will be very American - and very unexpected," Monahan said. "Park is a genius; it's the Everest of adaptations, and I've got blood in my teeth to do it."
Monahan recently wrote Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" and Paramount's remake of "The Gambler." He'll next direct the original thriller "Mojave," in development at Atlas Entertainment. His production company, Henceforth Pictures, has a number of feature and television projects in development including a screen adaptation of his first novel, "Light House: A Trifle" and "The Throwaways," based on a New Yorker piece by journalist Sarah Stillman.

Between this and the Oldboy remake, I have my doubts that either will have the guts to be as extreme as their Korean counterparts. Half the reason I've loved the Korean films I've seen is because they're often willing to go places our movies would never dare.
Also, it makes me mad when they remake perfectly good foreign movies just for US people who won't watch a movie with subtitles.

I have no interest in American remakes of foreign films, especially when they're as good as Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. People should broaden their horizons and just watch the original movies.

Yeah, Theron seems right for the lead role. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. At the very least, it gives me another reason to revisit the original (which I enjoyed a lot).

It's my favorite of the trilogy. Interesting for sure. A needless remake but will be interesting how this turns out. If I hear or see good things from it, I'll watch it.

They are remaking Lady AND Oldboy? Don't know how I feel about this. Mr Vengeance is my favorite, but I really like all three.

James Brolin should play the villain.
The original had some of the most disturbing stuff I've seen in a movie, it'll be interesting to see if they tone this one down or go in a different direction.

Oldboy is the perfect example of what Korean cinema has to offer. It's final twist is something I can't imagine any US movie going anywhere near.

I recall Theron has been attached to this project for years now, so I hope it does move forward.
I actually find Lady Vengeance to be the best made of the trilogy despite having the worst story, I like Mr Vengeance the least but found the plot to be the most interesting of the three.
Oldboy struck the proper balance.

It was underwhelming after the excellence that was Oldboy, but it gets better every time I watch it. I think Lady Vengeance may be the best film of the trilogy, but I enjoy watching Oldboy more.

Like most, I was introduced to this trilogy via Oldboy and didn't even realize that was part of a trilogy at first. Walking into ANY movie expecting the awesomeness that is Oldboy will leave you disappointed. But once you realize the other two stand on their own and accept that, then you can appreciate them a bit more. They're great but are being compared to a better movie is all.

I think SfLV is a fucking great film, better than Oldboy. BUT....Oldboy maintains enough elements that I already admire in a movie that I enjoy it more. Not to say SfLV isn't enjoyable for me but that it does not have as much as Oldboy does for me.

IMO Mr. Vengeance is the best. It is a much purer film than the others. There is more substance to it than style.
1. Mr. Vengeance
2. Oldboy
3. Lady Vengeance
1. Mr. Vengeance
2. Oldboy
3. Lady Vengeance

That was my issue with it, it had substance but the direction was so bland and the pacing so slow that I got bored with it. The story was great though. I had a similar issue with Mother, a movie story I enjoyed but a movie I didn't really like.

My take on the three films:
1. You feel sorry for everyone.
2. You don't know who to feel sorry for.
3. You don't feel sorry for anyone
They are all about the futility of revenge in different ways...
