In theaters, Avengers.

On Blu, probably Malick's New World.

He's just trying extra hard to be pretentious.

If he was telling the truth, it'd be a Pokemon movie.

While I've liked a lot of movies this year, the only one where I would say I was blown away was Cloud Atlas.

Skyfall was a surprise. An even bigger surprise for me is a sixties flick called Deadlier Than the Male. I love the Matt Helm and Flint flicks. I had read some comparisons to this movie - which also features Elke Sommers - to those films. So for giggles I ordered it last week from Amazon and figured I'd be kicking myself for throwing away my money foolishly on a crappy flick. Absolutely loved every minute. It actually shocked me in a scene or two. It's fun, goofy, cheesy and ballsy.

Oh, come now, I can be pretentious with very little effort.

And you're absolutely right about the latter point.

I saw this in a theater last December and it was freakin' awesome:

Best movie of 2011.

The Amazing Spiderman. I thought this was going to be a tired retread with another boring origin story. But Andrew Garfield was great as Peter Parker and I rate this film as one of the best Spidermans. It was certainly better than Spiderman 3.

Any 4 1960's cartoon episodes were better than this new movie.

And The Amazing Spider-Man looped three times is better than Raimi's trilogy.

Keep telling yourself that and some day you just might believe it.

Gotta agree with The Raid: Redemption love. Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

No need to convince myself about it. I just need to simply take it on a movie by movie basis. Part 1 has not aged well at all. In less than 10 years Spider Man has become seriously dated. The CG looked bad when the movie was new but now the computer effects look horrendous. Add in Maguire's sad sack portrayal of Peter and the extreme miscasting of Kirsten Dunst and it just doesn't hold up.

Part 3 is not a good movie at all. Any way you look at it it's a complete mess of a movie.

That really only leaves part 2 which I think is the best of the trilogy. However, I also think TASM equals it or even betters it due to Garfield's pitch perfect performance and his chemistry with Emma Stone.

Just my opinion, of course.

Re: Last time you were blown away by a movie?

Spiderman 2 was definitely the best of Raimí's triology. But I'm glad that Sam Raimi moved on and didn't do two more Spidermans which was on the cards at one point. The franchise need new blood and I wanted to see Raimi tackle other stuff.

Can't say I was "blown away" by Cloud Atlas but in the few days since I've seen it I can't stop mulling it over in my head. It's been a long time since a movie has stuck with me like that. I definitely look forward to the blu-ray in a coulpe months...

The Usual Suspects (theatrically). I don't recall seeing any trailers for it, and we didn't get any of the "Who Is Keyser Soze?" print ads around here, so I went into it completely blind.

The Usual Suspects and Memento are both brilliant and far from conventional. By the way I thought Memento was Guy Pearce's best movie.

Speaking of not seeing any trailers for a film. I was dragged to a showing of From Dusk til Dawn only knowing that dude from ER and Tarantino were in it. Man talk about being shocked when the reveal happened.
