My guess is the clip in the trailer is CGI, and Mark Hamill played around with a real, practical remote control version on set.

I guess how they film, it, it could be practical if the rest is hidden behind it. A rod is holding the head in place. Might also be sped up film and really travels only 2-3 mph.

So how does the head stay attached to the ball when it is moving? I assume that within the movie it can turn in any direction while moving and the head would still stay on top of the ball. I want to see how they make an action figure out of this guy or even a remote controlled version.

How much weight do you give Hamill's anecdote though?
I've seem his comments and there are several reasonable scenarios to cast doubt on his anecdote:
He's lying to distance the movie from the orgy of CGI that is the PT.
Hamill's version of the anecdote comes from someone else and is the confuzed old-man version of something else entirely.
The person who told Hamill was lying or uninformed.
So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I don't believe Hamill. I'm not accusing him of being a dastardly, deceptive character or a senile idiot, I just don't think its reasonable to look at his quote and say it settles it.

It seems like people have been repeating the mantra "it had to be CGI, there was no other way to do it" for so many years they lost all imagination.
There is a lot that can be done practically, folks.

I thought there was supposed to be something on Disney XD tonight about TFA. Did anybody catch it or know where it is on the Web?

I didn't catch it (and apparently it didn't air in all markets), but I read that it was just the kid from Kirby Bucket pointing out a couple things in the trailer fans had already noticed weeks ago: Rey's goggles are made out of the lenses from a Stormtrooper helmet and Poe Dameron's vest has "Pull to Inflate" written on it in Aubresh. A description on Nerdist also mentioned the kid said something like "Remember this desert planet?", implying it was indeed Tatooine.

According to Kevin Smith's latest Hollywood Babble-On podcast (remember, Kevin got to visit the set), he claims BB-8 is a "puppet" that has bars below it, and they're just CGI'ing out the bars in this shot. So the shot IS partially CGI'd, but not the part we thought. The Robot part is real. The shadow beneath him (and possibly parts of the desert) is CGI.

New name supposedly registered by Lucasfilm: Captain Phasma
Based on the rumors, it's probably Gwendoline Christie's character.
