Pretty much guaranteed that the director and writer will be big names. No way would Disney entrust this property to some random hack. Gore Verbinski, Brad Bird, or any of the big directors with a history at the Mouse House will in the running. Heck, let Spielberg direct the first one to see how he would do.
Hey, what's Christopher Nolan up to these days?

Has Spielberg ever worked for Disney before? I can't image that Lucas would stay on as executive producer and not throw his name out given how they are buddies.

Duncan Jones might be an interesting choice. I would have thought about Matt Reeves, but he'll be tied up with the Apes sequel.

Yeah - I'm confused. Back in the 70s Lucas claimed there were going to be nine films. Then when the prequels come out he swears he never said that and always intended it to be six. Now apparently he really was planning nine all along.

The best thing about making new movies going forward is that we won't have "yes men" telling George everything is great during the entire process.
I am hoping this deal was not health related.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, D: Unknown, S: Unknown)
Back in the 1970's - Lucas was thinking: "Yeah, I have all the power and energy to do NINE of these films!"
2005: Lucas was thinking: "Boy, am I spent. I'm getting too old for this shit. I'm done. Let's leave it at SIX."
Summer 2012: Lucas was thinking: "What could I do to sweeten the Disney deal? Promise another trilogy, but let someone else do the dirty work!!!!"

He told Mark Hamill, during the shoot for ANH, that there would be twelve movies.

Brad Bird would be perfect, I agree with that one.
Back in the day I thought George Miller would make a great director for Ep. 1. That was well before Happy Feet though. We'll see how the new Mad Max turns out...I think he'd still probably be a good choice.

Can't we find some other movies to discuss? I'm sure geeks around the world have something else on their minds... It's like we just got an announcement that's equitable to the moon landing.

Yeah....
This is the moon-landing equivalent of geek news because no one saw it coming and it's Star Wars.
