???????? The article is from 2011, it's now 2012, that's all I meant.

In any case, even assuming that we DO we get the OOT out of this, there's still the question of the unaltered versions of THX 1138, Raiders, and American Graffiti, they're probably lost causes too with their rights scattered.

Todd B.'s "friend-of-a-friend" news was from a post made in September 2012 though.

Oh, OK, I was referring to the article, I was under the assumption that it was being referenced. I've been hearing buzz about this hear and over at originaltrilogy.com about how "Oh, Disney is going to restore the OOT!" I would certainly love nothing better, but with all of this "friend-of-a-friend"rumor buzz, I just find it hard to believe it's anything other than wishful thinking. I'd certainly love for it to be true, but I can't forget that last time we were told there'd be a "restoration," it turned out to be the laserdisc masters, so I'm reticent to get hopes up. Plus, as aforementioned, there's the question of the rights to other movies which have undergone Lucas' tampering which people seldom mention. I think that the unaltered versions of THX 1138, Raiders, and American Graffiti are just as important as questions. Near as I've been able to figure, Zoetrope keeps THX. I wonder if that was Lucas holding things up, just a question of the original market being tiny, or some combination thereof. I think American Graffiti stays with Universal (the changes to that were apparently so minor that no one in his right mind would notice unless it's an obsessive person such as I), but Indy is the big question. Like Fox retaining the rights to distribute the existing Star Wars movies, do the Lucasfilm rights to Indy go to Disney, but not the distribution rights? After Spielberg's statements that he's through with digital revisionism in concurrence with the proper release of E.T., the Raiders BR speaks a different story (especially given the initial rumor I heard about the original soundtrack).

There's tons of information being thrown around here with currently very little concrete evidence for anything. I don't mean that as something accusatory towards and posters who've made these statements, I'd love for them to be right, but I've spent so long looking at the OOT, the aforementioned movies, and the last part of Gargoyles as being about as likely as cold fusion, that I'm admittedly reticent to believe anything at this point. But hey, maybe dreams do come true, we'll see. Fandom is a frustrating thing :-P.

I looked at the copyright information for THX 1138, and it looks like Warner Brothers has full copyright ownership on that one, and American Zoetrope was only the production company. In any case, Lucasfilm is not involved at all, so it's not affected in any way by this Disney deal.

As far as Indiana Jones goes, it looks like Lucasfilm has full copyright ownership on that one, so the "encumbrances" Disney mentioned must be some kind of perpetual distribution and licensing deal with Paramount then. As far as I can tell, Paramount has no copyright interest. That shouldn't preclude Lucasfilm/Disney from releasing whatever versions it wants (through Paramount).

Damn. So I guess it's a lost cause then, it'll forever be altered . Can't imagine them having any reason to release it properly.

Basically the same thing with Fox, then? I'm sort of hoping that they let that franchise rest, especially after the last installment, but I don't see the possibility of them releasing the original version of Raiders as very high . Then again, my understanding is that the changes are fairly minor, they probably wouldn't be noticed by anyone except a purist such as I. I'll be honest, it's the remixing of the audio that bugs me most, though I've heard the BR remix is a damn good one. But if you're a normal, well-adjusted person who gets laid once in a while, that probably won't matter to you as much as it does me . There's a mysterious new poster over on originaltrilogy.com who's alleging that Disney is working on OOT restorations all of a sudden, so I'm an obvious skeptic. I still feel the need to bat for Raiders, AG (which I think is still with Universal), and especially THX 1138, since I think the issues are just as important and get slipped under the radar because of the popularity of the Star Wars movies, but I also need to get a life .

Sources: Lawrence Kasdan, Simon Kinberg Lock Deals to Write and Produce 'Star Wars' Installments
4:41 PM PST 11/20/2012 by Borys Kit

The pair will write either Episode VIII or Episode IX — their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined — and they will also come aboard to produce the films.

Even under a secrecy of a Jedi mind trick, certain secrets — like the plans for a Death Star — can still spill out.

Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have closed deals to write installments of the new Star Wars trilogy, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The pair will write either Episode VIII or Episode IX — their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined — and they will also come aboard to produce the films.

As THR previously reported, Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) is writing the script for Episode VII, the first of the new trilogy and the first Star Wars film to be made without the hands-on input of creator George Lucas.

Kasdan and Kinberg would join Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as producers.

Word of Kasdan and Kinsberg's involvement began spilling out on Tuesday but Disney and Lucasfilm are declining to comment. Official announcements regarding the new Star Wars will appear on StarWars.com, according to the studio.

Kasdan is a Lucasfilm and Star Wars vet. He co-wrote 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, still considered the movie series’ zenith, as well as 1983’s Return of the Jedi. He also wrote the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Kinberg is co-writing the new X-Men movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past and was a producer on X-Men: First Class. He is currently producing Cinderella for Disney.

Kasdan is repped by CAA and attorney Robert Marshall at Greenberg Glusker while Kinberg is repped by CAA and attorney Karl Austen at Jackoway Tyerman.

Spoiler:

ABC's Extreme Home Makeover

I know that Star Wars characters have been used before in shows like these but I wonder if we'll see an increase in this type of promotion.

I expect ABC to have Star Wars promotions and tie-ins all the time in the near future. ABC has a serious problem attracting male viewers and Star Wars is one of the best properties to reach that demographic.

So the first new SW thing after the acquisition is a Clone Trooper on Extreme Home Makeover?! My hopes are dashed.
