It's been a looong time since I've read it, but if you are referring to
Spoiler:
Batman's funeral almost fooling Superman
then I agree. If you're not then please remind me, as that is all I remember about the end of the comic.

The whole shebang

Spoiler:
Batman faking his death, almost fooling Superman, then reopening the batcave and the closing lines.

I've heard a lot of people say that but I found Year One to be incredibly boring.
Spoiler:
As much as I like Mazzucelli's[sp?] artwork, his particular style was too subtle for the story. The story didn't have many colorful supervillains except for a brief Catwoman appearance. The rest of the story focused on Jim Gordon, corrupt politicians and the mob in Gotham. I think an artist who could convey facial expressions for the characers more strongly would have been a better choice.

It also felt strange to read The Dark Knight Returns which featured President Reagan and a 50 year old Batman, and then read Year One which featured a 20 something Bruce Wayne rumored to be dating Princess Caroline.

I am probably one of the biggest Bat-fanboys around. I own >90% of all the Bat-family comics from COIE to present day. Nearly full runs of Batman and Detective as well as Legends of the Dark Knight, Shadow of the Bat, Gotham Knights, Streets of Gotham, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and heck I even own Azrael's ongoing series.

Yet I will never disgrace my collection by adding The Dark Knight Returns to it.

Re: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (Animated Movie)

Year One made a good basis for Batman Begins, but as a standalone comic isn't all that interesting.

TDKR is a classic for a reason.

Az-Bats but no Dark Knight Returns First time for everything.

I haven't picked this up yet. Hoping for a set of both parts.

So you own complete shit but wouldn't dare disgrace that by adding a decent comic to that group. Got it.

The Azrael ongoing series was in the late 90s, after the whole Az-Bats thing of Knightfall/Knightquest/KnightsEnd.

The Azrael series wasn't that bad at all. Denny O'Neil wrote the vast majority of it.

How are all of you seeing this?
Did you all buy the DVD?
Is it on-line somewhere?
Or did it show on television?

The Blu-ray is awesome as usual with these DCU features. The Dark Knight Returns might be the best movie yet from DC. Why Kevin Conroy wasn't cast as Batman is beyond me, but Warner Bros. keeps casting horrible choices for their voiceover roles.

Re: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (Animated Movie)

Let me stir up the pot by saying I like Year One and TDKR both!

Really, though, I look forward to watching this some time in the next week or so, as I've mostly heard good things about it. Funny, because before it came out all I read online was bitching about it.

I also own the entire original Azrael run, have an Az-Bats action figure, and have 3 Az-Bats posters.

Re: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (Animated Movie)

For such a comic nerd, color me surprised that kennyrogers79 doesn't like The Dark Knight Returns. Also, apparently I'm going to jab my ears out because Kevin Conroy doesn't do Batman's voice. I think he should do it all the time because he was the voice in the cartoons I grew up with.

Re: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (Animated Movie)

Year One was the better adaptation (so far). TDKR was the better Graphic novel.

I liked that they seem to have played down Robin's role. She seemed more prevalent in the book and her character never really did anything for me. My only complaint was they could have done a better job of setting up how important and dangerous the Leader was and how much that showdown meant. Not to mention how much Batman feared him. In the movie he sort of came off as just another punk.

I thought Weller did a fine job.

(regarding the complaints about this being animated)

As somebody who grew up with the Superfriends in the 80's and Batman TAS in the 90's, it's the live-action Bat films that always seem like "other" projects to me. Especially considering his comic origins, it's odd to see complaints about movies like this being animated.

Re: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (Animated Movie)

I didn't see a thread for it, but I watched the animated Batman Year One this weekend, and I thought it was very good...definitely worth a watch and probably a buy if you're a fan.

It was a bit odd to not have Conroy as Batman, but Bryon Cranston as Commissioner Gordon was a brilliant choice, and on some level, it's more a Gordon story than a Batman story anyway.

Just because I'm a comic nerd doesn't mean I like every comic ever written.

The guy they cast for Gordon sounds completely wrong. He sounds like a whiney 20-year old.

Well, judging from the Batman books you do like, it sure seems like it.

I know, and then recently revived during Battle for the Cowl. No sight of him in the 52 though.

Denny O'Neil hasn't written a decent story in 30 years...maybe 40.
