Re: Dredd 3D (Travis, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

Yeah, I don't believe him at all.

The script was out before The raid went into production.

Here’s a Dredd / Raid Timeline –

2006: DNA seeking rights to make Dredd. Script-work begins.

2007/2008: Alex garland writes first drafts of Dredd ‘Peach Trees’ screenplay.

12/2008: Alex Garland named publicly as Dredd screenwriter.

09/2009: Artist, Mark ‘Jock” Simpson confirms he has been creating visuals from Garland’s 'Peach Trees' Dredd script.

05/2010: Dredd creator, John Wagner, confirms Dredd script is written.

07/2010: Version 8 of Dredd 'Peach Trees' script is LEAKED online.

07/2010: Late July, Todd Brown confirms working with Gareth Evans on Berandal.

08/2010: Somewhere between Aug. ’10 & Nov. ’10, Gareth Evans shelves the film Berandal due to budget and begins work on The Raid script.

08/2010: Pre-production on Dredd begins.

11/2010: Pre-production on Raid begins.

11/2010: Dredd begins filming, finishes in Feb.’11 and enters a year of post-production.

03/2011: Raid begins filming.
Sorry, way too much of a coincidence.

I would say it's definitely in the interests of The Raid's creators to say they were not aware of Dredd.

It's not that much of a coincidence. It's not like either one is the most original movie ever. Let's ease on back on the Dredd fellatio a bit.

What coincidence? All I see from the above is that The Raid was produced much quicker than Dredd. That happens when you're not dealing with an existing franchise.

Exactly. There are elements of all of the films he mentions in the interview.

I'm going to see Dredd soon, but my understanding is that the only real "coincidence" is that it's in an apartment and there's a drug lord in charge or something. What I've read is that all the actual action scenes, characters, deaths, etc. are entirely different.

The execution of the three failed gangsters in the opening of both films is one hell of a coincidence.

I'd also argue the element of police corruption being key to the third act a pretty big coincidence.

Compare the story/scripts in Merentau and The Raid Redemption and the difference in quality is shocking, considering it's the exact same team.

Eh, it was okay, you can tell it was filmed for cheap. I was expecting balls to the walls action from the posts but there's really not much there.

It's a tremendously basic plotline. It's all about the execution.

Dredd was more fun than Raid.

Not much action?

Are you sure you didn't accidently pop in Judge Dredd 1995?

Really, there wasn't. There's that really long set with the gatling guns, but it wasn't all too impressive.

I was expecting Dredd to kill, like, 1000 people.

I want to give it a 7/10 but I think that's too generous. On the other hand it was miles better than the 95 piece of crap.

50,000,000 is not cheap. Believe me, at first I was like what did they spend the money on (before I saw it) and when I saw the making-of featurettes - there's TONS of post production work that went into the film.

$50M budget and shot on location in South Africa is not cheap.

If you compare this movie to the Steven Seagal, Van Damme, Snipes, Lundgren direct to video action movies, those look dirt cheap compared to this.

$50M these days is peanuts for an action film.

Well, at least it compares well to a direct to video movie.

I have to agree. I watched it this morning and wasn't too terribly impressed. I went in with very low expectations. Honestly the only reason I watched it was because so many here seemed to like it so much.

I was expecting a thin plot, cool action and a ton of violence. Unfortunately it only delivered on the thin plot. It was way too stylized. I was hoping for more of a straightforward action flick. Too much slow-mo and filtering.

How much more straightforward did it have to be? Dredd was in a building and his objective was to get out of said building.

Is that bad? The movie presents itself in a very different world from ours. The Slo-Mo had a point. Other wise it was very controlled in it's use. There honestly wasn't a lot of it. And it rocked it well when it had a point for it. The gripe for filtering is rather weak. It's a filter to promote the image it wants to create. It worked well for it.

There were many people killed in this film. And it was done very well. Some hand to hand, mostly gun action though.

The action as a whole was very fresh in comparison to EX2.

There were many people killed, but not by Dredd. I wanted to see justice dispensed, not him running from a machine gun.

Maybe he should have just stood there and taken the bullets.

Maybe they should have done a different action piece that didn't involve him running from a machine gun. What's so interesting about seeing people that you didn't know a second before getting shot from a machine gun?

Finally got a chance to watch the Blu-Ray I bought. It was fun re-visiting this one.

Random question about a scene for anyone:

Spoiler:
If the Judge's guns required DNA checks, why did Dredd let Anderson get taken by Kay? Wasn't he holding Anderson with her own primary weapon?

That was laid out simply, I just felt that it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. I actually like the idea behind the plot but it felt a little empty and short. The constant shifts to the security cameras and the change in how the film looked didn't work very well. It felt annoying in a Tony Scott-Domino sort of way.

I didn't like the way the slow-mo stuff was shot. It came off as cheesy and I didn't like the color palette for those scenes.

Dredd wasn't badass enough. He was supposed to be one badass motherfucker and I don't think the film did much with that. Urban actually came of as cool but there wasn't much time given to him. I think maybe the action scenes ended too quickly, other than the one Shazam has mentioned. I was expecting more John Woo-type shootouts. A lot of the action was obscured and not edited very well. I think the movie would have worked better if it hadn't been as stylized (I hate using that word but it fits best here).

Spoiler:
1) He moved toward them to do something, but the elevator doors closed before he could do whatever it was. 2) If the perp had pulled the trigger, the exploding gun would have taken her head off.
