director Tony Scott dies in apparent suicide
just saw this on the Wrap
Director Tony Scott jumped off the Vincent Thomas bridge near Long Beach on Sunday and died from his injuries.
The Los Angeles coroner confirmed to TheWrap that Anthony David Scott of Beverly Hills jumped off the bridge and died on Sunday. That is Scott's full name, and the British-born director has lived in Los Angeles for many years.
The U.S. Coast Guard told The Daily Breeze that a suicide note was found inside Scott's black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.
Scott is a well-known Hollywood director who is best known for high-octane action movies including "Top Gun," "Crimson Tide" and many other hit movies. He is the brother of Ridley Scott, another prominent director, both born in England. They are partners in a production company, Scott Free Productions.
His most recent movies were "Unstoppable" and "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3."
He was also in the process of exploring a sequel to his biggest hit, "Top Gun 2."
The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a suspension bridge over Los Angeles Harbor that links San Pedro with Terminal Island. It appears frequently in films and television.

This comes as a surprise. I was just thinking of Spy Game today for some reason.

I smell BS. No other website is reporting this except for The Wrap. If this were true, TMZ would be all over this. I could be wrong, but I hope that I am right.

Now confirmed sadly.
He made some really interesting films. The Last BoyScout is one of the greatest nihillistic action films of all time and Crimson Tide was a great dramatic endeavour.
Lots to like though he was always overshadowed by his brother.

Re: director Tony Scott dies in apparent suicide
More details in this article. Very sad news. Wonder what happened to make him think this was the answer to whatever problem he had. He directed many of my favorite film memories.

British film director Tony Scott, known for such Hollywood blockbusters as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder," "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "The Taking of Pelham 123," jumped to his death Sunday from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.
Scott, 68, climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge's apex and leapt off "without hesitation" around 12:30 p.m., according to the Coroner's Department and port police.
A suicide note was found inside Scott's black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jennifer Osburn.
Scott directed Tom Cruise in "Top Gun," one of the highest-grossing
films of 1986, and worked with the actor again four years later on the hit "Days of Thunder," which also featured his third and current wife, actress Donna Scott. The couple have twin boys.
Known for his trademark red baseball cap, Scott also directed "Beverly Hills Cop II," starring Eddie Murphy, "Enemy of the State," starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman, and "The Taking of Pelham 123," starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.
Scott and his older brother, producer Ridley Scott, were co-producers on the CBS dramas "NUMB3RS" and "The Good Wife." The pair recently wrapped "Coma," a four-hour, two-night medical thriller starring Ellen Burstyn set for release next month on A&E.
Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol joined city firefighters and the Coast Guard in searching the water for his body.
Cargo vessels moved at slow speeds through the east side of the Main Channel during the search, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
"It's a dolorous task and we're working to treat the deceased with the utmost dignity and respect," Humphrey said.
Authorities used sonar equipment to track the man in the port's murky waters and his body was recovered by a dive team around 4:30 p.m., Alva said. Scott's body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner.
One lane of the eastbound side of the bridge was closed to traffic during the investigation.
Erected in 1963, the 6,060-foot bridge links San Pedro with Terminal Island and rises 185 feet at its highest point above the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Many have taken their lives by jumping from the span

Yeah you really have to wonder. I mean he was clearly well off, and obviously that's not a cure for happiness, but at the very least it can get you the best treatment/therapy out there.
Anyone else remember when the opening scene from Top Gun was the official test for your home sound system?

I didn't like most of his output, but it's always sad to see someone take their own life, especially people with a family left behind.

No "What is Denzel Washington going to do now?" jokes?
Sad when people think ending it is the only answer. He's directed a number of movies I liked. I guess Top Gun 2 will never come to fruition now.
