Which versions "The Leopard" and "Scenes From a Marriage" would you recommend?

Just picked up Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage and Visconti's The Leopard recently on Criterion. Both have 2 different versions in each respective Criterion set. Scenes has a theatrical cut and a much longer tv cut, while The Leopard has an original cut and an American cut.

Which of each would you recommend and why?

Thanks.

Even though I should, I have not yet watched Scenes From a Marriage (been sitting on my shelf for years). I have seen both versions of The Leopard and I recommend the longer Italian version over the shorter American version. One thing I do like about the American version is that it uses Burt Lancaster's real voice.

I've only seen the television cut of Scenes from a Marriage, but I can't imagine watching the truncated version. It is an exhausting, emotionally draining experience, but also exhilarating and completely worthwhile. I've seen it twice in its entirety.

The television cut is the original cut of Scenes From A Marriage, and is absolutely the way to watch it.

I'd also recommend, after watching it, that you check out Saraband. It is a follow-up to the characters from Scenes From A Marriage, and was Bergman's final film.

Saraband was actually my introduction to Bergman. I wasn't aware at the time that it was a sequel of sorts. Scenes From a Marriage is almost the last Bergman I need to see before I've seen everything. minus a few of his early films.

Thanks for the input everyone.

You're in for a treat. It's one of his best.

TV cut of Scenes is longer and more complete. It's 4 or 5 episodes so you don't have to watch it all at once either.

The Leopard should really ONLY be watched in its longer Italian version. The US version is heavily shortened. CC only included it because it does have Lancasters own voice but that's it.

on the technical side the American cut of 'The Leopard' has an aspect ratio of 2.35, while the original cut is 2.20 - there's a third version out there the recent 4K restoration/transfer was reframed at 2.55
