Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (D: Tsui Hark, S: Jet Li)
I got to see this today (sadly, not in 3D). It's a loose remake of Raymond Lee's New Dragon Gate Inn (also produced by Tsui Hark) but very much a different movie by the end. In a weird way, by the end, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate becomes a pseudo sequel to New Dragon Gate Inn (you'll understand once you watch it) and even veers into a third act that feels like a Wu Xia adaptation of Uncharted. There's a large cast of characters and lot's of scheming and double crosses right down to the last possible minute and some fun action to keep it all moving at a steady pace. Overall, although a bit too over-the-top in spots, I had a whole lot of fun with this and look forward to getting it on BD.

Re: Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (D: Tsui Hark, S: Jet Li)
From that trailer, it looks like the women have minor roles in the action. Which is quite a contrast with the Tsui Hark/Raymond Lee DRAGON INN (1992), in which Brigitte Lin and Maggie Cheung are the main stars and dominate the action, and the King Hu original, DRAGON INN (1967), which starred the great Polly Shang Kuan. Both of which I saw on the big screen.
I should also point out that all the effects in the 1992 DRAGON INN were achieved with mechanical means in front of the camera, in real time, without a single instance of optical printing or CGI--and most of it on location, too. So if I'm not impressed with this trailer, I come by it honestly.

Despite what the trailer might have you believe, Ash Ketchum, the women have a major part to play in the action. In fact, despite his top billing, Jet Li feels more like a supporting role

well...guess I'm sold. I hate the CGI that the Chinese have. It always looks like shit. Good movies are able to overcome that flaw..but still...an annoyance.

That's a really fun trailer but it practically gives away the whole movie. I would have loved to have seen this in IMAX.

One thing I miss about living near Hong Kong is being able to go and see a new kung-fu movie every month (if I wanted to). Unfortunately the remake of Chinese Ghost Story was so terrible that it kept me away from theaters playing Chinese films for a long, long time.

I'm very tempted now to pick up the 3D blu ray you mentioned a while back RocShemp. But that CGI is damn distracting though. Since I highly doubt this will ever hit IMAX here (in Texas that is), I guess the only way to see this is by import, or wait until this hit stateside on blu.

They took it down. All we get is a message that says, "This video is private."

They are actually releasing this film in the states? This movie sucked and was boring.

Re: Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (D: Tsui Hark, S: Jet Li)
the action scenes were fun, but I thought there were far more characters than the story actually needed - the 3D was wild and very effective, and I thought the soundmix was downright assaultive. The movie though could have tightened up and clipped around fifteen minutes or more, and what the hell was that ending - that was a headscratcher.

no where that I'm aware of, but the Freer Gallery shows Asian films of differing genres:
http://www.asia.si.edu/events/films.asp the former. as for the second one, it happened so quickly it made the scene seem too perfunctory. |
