El Presidente - Possible Cruise, Downey Jr. team up
Funny concept but Bill Murray would be better as the Ex-President.

Jay Roach (who directed our beloved John Heilemann's Game Change for HBO and is behind this summer’s Will Ferrell–Zach Galifianakis film The Campaign) is in negotiations to direct a presidential movie of a different sort: El Presidente, a Warner Bros. comedy from Parks and Recreation writer Dan Goor.
One shouldn't normally get excited about development, but this sounds like a very funny project: Basically, it follows an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America's worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president's life and they must go on the run.
The best part? While Vulture hears the studio is going to take another pass at the Goor script, the plan is to offer the part of the banished agent to Tom Cruise and the role of the former president to Robert Downey Jr. So, it's Midnight Run, with Ethan Hunt standing in for De Niro and Downey Jr. for Charles Grodin, with the director of Meet the Parents calling the shots?
We're told that Warners, already in business with Downey Jr. on its Sherlock Holmes movies, is now especially keen on Cruise, having seen his work in New Line Cinema's Rock of Ages.

Yeah...I think it'd be cooler to have the roles reversed. The current set for the roles is kind of...predictable especially w/ Cruise being the agent.

RDJ is too young to play a ex-pres and Cruise isn't a comedian. I like both leads but this doesn't seem like a good fit.

Cruise has loads of charisma and can be funny, but in small doses. He over stayed his welcome in Tropic Thunder, don't understand why everybody thought it was so funny.

Agreed. He may have overstayed his welcome a tad bit in Tropic Thunder but he was still pretty darn funny.
Oddly enough, I'd say his funniest role was in A Few Good Men. He was charming, charismatic, and humorous. If he could manage to keep that lighthearted tone throughout this movie I'd watch it.

I realize we've had some young presidents, but they are always old men by the time they leave office. If the average age of a president going in is 55, 47 for a ex-pres is young.

Bah, I'm sure they'll add a touch of gray hair to Downey Jr's temples and boom, El Presidente!

This could be a team up for Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise though. Haven't they expressed interest in working together? Stiller as the secret service agent, Cruise as The Prez.
