I didn't know it had anything to do with race, I just thought it was a really annoying cliche that was decades past its shelf date.

It's seriously odd, though. You have to assume most people who make movies are movie fans, so why keep beating the "chosen one" dead horse? Why not just, you know, have a person find a way into a world and offer up a new perspective the people there hadn't considered, thus helping to save the day without being some anointed arriver.

Re: Tomorrowland (2015, Bird) S: Clooney, Robertson, Laurie

It's because most see movies as an escape from reality, that there's a chance of "something more" out there, and the "chosen one" trope is the easiest/laziest way to implement this.

It's done pretty regularly in movies, literature, videogames... basically every form of entertainment. It's fantasy fulfillment that we'll just fall into something because it was destined to happen. Plus a lot of people were raised to believe in "destiny".

I think people like believing there's a chance that they're something special

First, the industry is filled with people who aren't out there to have the unique ideas on screen. Second, film productions, especially of this size, are a massively collaborative venture.

Right, I get that, but I would've thought someone like Bird would have more unique ideas that don't have to yield to convention because he's got some clout in town.

Or, maybe those just are his sort of ideas.

When you have Damon Lindelof on board, no trope gets by.

This is the closest thing we're getting to a BioShock movie for a while so they have big shoes to fill

This is just another tease by the Hollywood elite that the Illuminati exist and gives us false hope that we regular people can save the world when they destroy it. They LOL

I didn't realize, and now it all makes sense.

So does this end in a church with Clooney and the rest of the cast realizing the events of the movie are the most important moments of their lives?

"Well, you're not the chosen one, but since the one we chose got a higher-paying gig with the opposition and skipped the interview, you'll just have to do."

Looks clever and very well designed. It's evident they took a lot of care in making the film, but the trailers make me zero interested. The early whispers when this was in development had me intrigued. Unless there are surprises not in the trailers (and I've seen the Japanese trailer with the It's a Small World references) there really doesn't seem to be much here. Just looks loud and dumb.

Holy shit. That looked fucking awesome. Brad Bird pretty much gets a pass from me anyway cuz of the miracles he pulled w/ MI4, that's besides that he did Iron Giant and The Incredibles.

I think there was a recent series of fantasy books where the "chosen one" was accidentally killed so a nobody had to step up and save the world.

Wow, that trailer played up the action a lot more. Very cool.

It looks like fun. An "empty calories" style flick, sure, but a fun rollercoaster ride nonetheless.

This movie looks great - so much fun and inventiveness.

But then Brad Bird is one of those guys who can't seem to make a bad movie, or even just a mediocre one.

I generally like Bird's movies and TomorrowLand (before they jacked it up) was my favorite DisneyLand land .. I'm in!

Bird is responsible for the only two Pixar movies I consider great and the most watchable of the Mission Impossible sequels so I'm down for this.
