"The Taking of Pelham 123

I have this movie and it is a very good flick. I love Denzel Washington and John Travolta and it is good to see them acting together. These two compliment each other (as John: bad guy vs Denzel as the good guy). I would like to ask a question: There was another movie out there that was about a near retired police station and the remaining police had to keep watch over some evil bad convicts; can any one please help me with this little problem? I would love to own this movie also.

Thanks

The other movie you're looking for is Assault on Precinct 13.

Really? No one?

It's clearly Assault on Precinct 13.

You guys are way off. He's obviously asking about one of the prequels, Assault on Precinct 1-12. I'm not sure which; they were all pretty similar plot-wise. Assault on Precinct 13 had dinosaurs, remember?

The remake with Travolta and Washington is GARBAGE.

X 100

Joseph Sargent's original film is the real deal. Matthau and Shaw are pitch perfect.

I fucking loathe Tony Scott (... aside from True Romance and The Hunger ).

They were showing the first one on HDNet a few months back. Awesome flick. A movie that did not need to be remade.

Re: "The Taking of Pelham 123

Weird. I've watched both the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and the original Assault on Precinct 13 for the first time just last week. I'm catching up on gritty '70s movies that I've skipped somehow over the years. Currently watching Matthau again in Charley Varrick. Great stuff.

Anyone else think Assault is essentially a zombie movie?

It's essentially Rio Bravo.

I recall John Carpenter once stating that was the plan. He wanted to make a zombie movie without actual zombies.

If you're still in a 70s mood - and you haven't seen it yet - check out Night Moves with Gene Hackman and a mostly-naked-all-the-time-and-very-young Melanie Griffith.

This seems like an appropriate thread for movies that are more than 5 years old.

Saw that for the first time a few months back and loved it. Very cool 70s noir. Gene Hackman rules.

*thwip*

And yes, the original Pelham and Assault are loads better than the recent remake.

Re: "The Taking of Pelham 123

I saw the Pelham remake last month for the first time when I chose it for the Action/Adventure/Crime Challenge over on DVD Talk. I thought it was terrible. Travolta was all over the place. I'm not a big fan of crime movies in which the lead criminal overacts like crazy. Real criminals who act that way get caught or killed pretty quickly. I want my crime movie villains to walk in, steal what they came to steal and get out, and then watch as the cops track him and his gang down and send him to jail or hell, whichever comes first.

In the Pelham original, Robert Shaw played it quiet and close to the vest and was much more effective.

Another vote for the original. I loved the music, all of the NY charaacters, and Walter Matthau in one of the best final shots...ever
