Great movie. Heaps of fun and infinitely better than any of the transformers turds which have floated their way to the box office in recent years. Crying shame that it did so poorly and will therefore have no follow-up. Would have been fun to find out what comes next.

Re: John Carter (2012, Director: Stanton, Star: Kitsch) -- The Reviews Thread
I watched this last weekend at a $3 theatre here in town and thought it was a lot better than I was expecting it to be given the bad buzz surrounding it on release. Still felt it was fairly average and rather slow in parts, especially the first part of the movie. Someone mentioned the names in the movie and I was right there as well, trying to remember them and keep track of who they were talking about.

I just caught this on Vudu and pretty much loved it. I though it flew by and was very entertaining.
And as far as big budget sci-fi movies with CGI creatures go, it was way better and more imaginative than Avatar.

Rented this movie a few days ago. I actually really liked it. I thought Taylor Kitsch was much more enjoyable as an action hero in this movie than he was in Battleship.
Excellent visual and creature effects. It's too bad that Disney spent a fortune on this movie and it bombed in the United States in the box office. I wouldn't have minded a sequel.
I may pick it this up on BD around the Holidays if it's between 10-15 bucks.

I ordered this in HD on demand over the weekend since my gf and I had been curious to see it.
Consider me surprised, but we both thought it was good. There was some obvious missteps in the narrative, and the movie got lost in itself more than once, but I was really invested in the whole story.
They could have done a little more to make Barsoom look more Mars-ish; it just looked like a landscape we've seen before. Not sure what else could've been done with it, though.
Mark Strong kicks ass. I'm finding his presence can elevate most films.
It would have been nice if the piss-poor marketing hadn't ruined the white ape battle from the film's third act.
Speaking of which, they christen it John Carter of Mars during the fucking credits? THAT'S the title to use to get people in theaters. If Stanton had kept his ass out of where it didn't belong, this might've done well enough to warrant a sequel. I highly doubt that'll ever happen now that this film is so closely associated with being a bomb, but the way things ended left me wanting to see more.

Personally, and despite similarities to many of ERB's Barsoomian words, story-wise he "borrowed" more from Andre Norton than from anyone else.

I went in expecting terrible, and was surprised that I liked this too.
The lead actress was wooden and flat, some other shortcomings, but I enjoyed the film.

I tried watching this last night and turned it off about halfway through.... nothing was working for me (except the score, which was great). The narrative structure, actors, dialogue, design...everything was just a turnoff to me.
Does the second half significantly improve... is there a battle at the end worth watching?

I thought it kept getting better as the film went on. It took me a little bit to get sucked into that universe, but I was sold by the halfway mark.

I enjoyed this movie a great deal. My only issue was the awkward prologue. The movie would have had a better start if that were cut and we went straight to New York (followed by the deleted scene in the school, to improve the pacing).

I'll try to finish the second half later today.

The initial prologue is definitely a misstep. I think it's a symptom of the rule in Hollywood action films that says you can spend a decent amount of time without action in the first act if you open the film with a big action sequence to satiate the audience.

Well I finished it (assisted by a few beers). I liked the twists and turns at the end, but...like the majority of the film it just felt very half-baked...not really communicating effectively what was happening. There has to be a fall guy in all of this and I'd have to put it on the director. I think Nemo 2 was his ultimatum if he wanted the reigns of a big film again. I think he'll do just fine, but it is a bit disappointing for those who are big fans of the John Carter series. I might seek out the books because of the film though.

My favorite scene in the film is when Carter is killing the aliens that are mobbing him and is juxtaposed with the scene of him burying his wife and child. That scene alone is worth price of admission. Very powerful and epic.

THIS. Great moment. Loved the alien dog in that scene too. Was great. Music, visuals, everything. Just great.

This movie was better than the majority of this summer's blockbusters. Damn shame it did so poorly so we'll never get a proper sequel.
